Huidong County: Spring silkworm production yields a bumper harvest, and it’s the right time to purchase silkworm cocoons
Sericulture is one of the pillar industries of agriculture in Huidong County, Liangshan Prefecture, Sichuan Province. It has a long history of planting mulberry and raising silkworms. This year, the purchase of the first batch of spring silkworm cocoons in Huidong County began on May 6. As of now, the purchase is nearing completion, and the second batch will be purchased soon.
At the Hongyan Cocoon Station of Huidong County CocoonSilk Company, sericulture farmers are bringing bags of cocoons for sale. The staff at the cocoon station screened, weighed, recorded, tested and graded the cocoons in an orderly manner. After the silkworm farmer sells the cocoons, the cocoon payment is paid electronically through the company’s smart sericulture system, and it arrives in the silkworm farmer’s account in a few seconds.
“I raised two silkworms this spring and sold them for more than 5,000 yuan. I am quite satisfied.” Gong Chaoxian, a sericulture farmer from the third group of Songping Village, Xinjie Town, plans to raise three silkworms in the second season. It can be raised five seasons a year, and the annual income is expected to be more than 20,000 yuan.
The development of the industry cannot be separated from the support of the government, and functional departments are also going all out to provide guidance and assistance in terms of technical services. Ai Jun, director of the Hongyan Cocoon Station of the County Cocoon Silk Company, told reporters, “Hongyan Cocoon Station provides a full range of technical support and services to sericulture farmers in Xinjie Town, ensuring the supply of silkworms in a timely manner. Through household registration and other methods, we can guide sericulture farmers to improve their sericulture techniques and help them increase their production and income.”
In recent years, the County Cocoon Silk Company has seized on the recovery situation in the silk market, adjusted purchase prices in a timely manner, and further encouraged sericulture farmers to strengthen mulberry orchard management, increase yields, and increase income.
It is understood that Xinjie Town is expected to raise 5,000 silkworms and produce about 4,000 tons of cocoons throughout the year. Due to the improvement in the cocoon silk market this year, the price of kilograms of silkworm cocoons has increased by 27.5% compared with the same period last year, and the total income of silkworm farmers is expected to reach 10 million.
