Tongxiang, Zhejiang: Silkworm farmers reap a bumper harvest as spring cocoons are harvested
In the past two days, Chuncocoon in Tongxiang City, Zhejiang Province officially opened the scale for purchase. This year, the city’s spring silkworm production is expected to reach more than 60 kilograms, and the purchase price has increased by nearly 40% compared with the same period last year.
After nearly a month of careful management, on the morning of May 24, Tao Jinchao, a silkworm farmer in Yuanfeng Village, Wuzhen Town, was busy harvesting spring cocoons. He told reporters that due to the suitable temperatures in April and May this year, the spring silkworms he raised had a good harvest, which is expected to bring him nearly 3,000 yuan in income.
The reporter learned that the current price of Baichang silk reaches 430,000 yuan/ton, a significant increase of nearly 40% compared with 240,000 yuan/ton in the same period last year. This has also brought the purchase price of spring cocoons in Tongxiang City to nearly 2,500 yuan/100 kilograms this year, a new high since 2012. “In the past few years, the cocoon and silk market has continued to be sluggish. This year, affected by the market and the general environment, the prices of bulk commodities have increased, and the purchase price of silkworm cocoons has also increased.” Wuzhen Town Yao Ruifang, head of Ruimeng Sericulture Cooperative, said.
In recent years, Tongxiang City has actively promoted the transformation and upgrading of the sericulture industry and increased the production and income of sericulture farmers. At present, the city has built 2 demonstration bases for the whole sericulture industry, and has more than 20 centralized co-breeding rooms for small silkworms that have passed the acceptance inspection. At the same time, through innovative models such as hospital-site cooperation, the sericulture industry chain has been driven to a highqualitydevelopment.
