Aramid demand growth prospects are promising, and we need to focus on our advantages to break through technical barriers
At present, the aramid industry is ushering in new development opportunities, and aramid fiber has also been listed as a green light project by the China Chemical Fiber Industry Association. However, due to its important strategic significance, developed countries have always implemented technical blockades and limited embargoes on it. The country started late and the technical problems have not been fundamentally solved, which has seriously restricted the development of the industry. Therefore, it is crucial to concentrate our superior forces to break through foreign technology monopoly, overcome technical problems of aramid fiber, and realize industrialization early.
Prospects for demand growth are promising
Aramid fiber has excellent properties such as ultra-high strength, high modulus, high temperature resistance, acid and alkali resistance, and light weight. Its strength It is 5 to 6 times that of steel wire, its modulus is 2 to 3 times that of steel wire or glass fiber, its toughness is 2 times that of steel wire, but its quality is only about 1/5 of steel wire. There are two varieties of aramid fiber with practical value: Aramid 1313 is an organic high-temperature-resistant fiber that was developed early, has large output, and is widely used. It is also a promising organic high-temperature fiber. So far, the annual production capacity has reached about 31,000 tons; Fiber 1414 has the characteristics of high strength and high modulus. It is known as the “Versatile King” among polymer materials and is a representative of today’s high-performance fiber materials. Since 2004, my country’s demand for aramid fiber has grown rapidly, but most of the domestic market is occupied by a few foreign manufacturers, with limited supply and high prices, making it difficult to meet domestic demand.
In the future, the amount of aramid 1313 fiber used in the field of protective clothing in my country will increase at a rate of more than 30% per year. The amount of aramid colored fiber used in the production of protective clothing and other interior decoration products will also increase. It is expected that The domestic market demand for aramid 1313 is 7,200 to 9,700 tons/year. Among them, the demand in the field of flame-retardant protective clothing is 2,000-3,000 tons/year, flame-retardant decorative fabrics are 1,500-2,000 tons/year, filter materials are 1,200-1,500 tons/year, insulating paper is 1,000-1,200 tons/year, and others It is 1500~2000 tons/year.
The demand for cord fabrics and brake pads for lightweight automotive radial tires is rising, and it is expected that the annual demand for para-aramid fiber will grow at a rate of more than 10% in the future. With the development of my country’s energy industry, the use of para-aramid fiber-reinforced rubber and thermoplastic resin as high-pressure transmission pipelines for oil and liquefied natural gas will be developed. The demand for para-aramid fiber in the fields of optical cables, bulletproof protective equipment, aerospace and national defense, rubber and composite materials in the communications industry will also continue to increase.
Industrialization encounters technical difficulties
There is a certain gap between my country’s aramid fiber technology level, product grade and production capacity and developed countries. The reasons why it is difficult to localize aramid fiber in my country are that firstly, it is difficult to break through the technical bottleneck of production; secondly, most of the raw materials need to be imported, especially the domestically produced solvents are not up to standard.
Aramid 1313 fiber was developed by DuPont in the United States. Since the industrialization of meta-aramid in the 1960s, DuPont has had a complete monopoly for a long time, with a current production capacity of about 25,000 tons. , the output accounts for nearly 80% of the total output, and product quality ranks first. Japan’s Teijin Company’s meta-aramid fiber factory has been built in Iwakuni, Yamaguchi Prefecture, with a production capacity of about 2,350 tons. Among them, short fiber products have certain competitiveness in the world.
Currently, there are only two meta-aramid fiber manufacturers in China, Yantai Spandex Company and Guangdong Xinhui Caiyan Co., Ltd. After several years of research and development based on the introduction of foreign technology, Yantai Spandex Company has developed Newstar brand meta-aramid with independent intellectual property rights. As of the end of 2006, its designed aramid 1313 production capacity has reached 2,500 tons/year, surpassing Teijin of Japan. The company’s production capacity. Guangdong Caiyan Co., Ltd. is a private enterprise. Its aramid production capacity currently reaches 1,000 tons/year, and its products are mainly conventional white staple fibers.
Due to technical research and development strength and other reasons, there are no domestic enterprises that produce aramid 1414 on a large scale. Yantai Spandex’s aramid 1414 has just entered the pilot stage.
Green light projects need to break down barriers first
With the advancement of science and technology and economic development, aramid fiber will also be used in more fields. At present, aramid manufacturers in the United States and Japan are scrambling to expand production, and the aramid industry is ushering in a new development opportunity.
As a new material supported and developed by the state, aramid fiber is included in the catalog of high-tech products encouraged by the state. In 2006, the chemical fiber investment early warning system of the China Chemical Fiber Industry Association listed aramid 1313 as ‘ Green Light’ project, aramid 1414 fiber is listed as a ‘Double Green Light’ project.
Our country’s energy conservation and emission reduction tasks are becoming increasingly arduous. Meta-aramid materials that are resistant to high temperature and chemical corrosion are urgently needed to filter and purify high-temperature exhaust gas, dust and sewage. With the rapid development of my country’s aerospace industry, The application of aramid materials will surely have greater breakthroughs; and modern national defense, fire protection, chemical industry, metallurgy, hydropower, geological mining, nuclear industry and other industries require special materials with heat insulation, breathability, flame retardancy, temperature resistance and corrosion resistance. Demand will also create a potentially huge market, thereby promoting the rapid development of my country’s aramid industry.
Therefore, vigorously developing aramid fiber and its upstream and downstream products is fully in line with the requirements of industrial structure adjustment and national industrial policy. For domestic scientific research institutions and related production enterprises, they must concentrate their superior forces to break through foreign technology monopoly as soon as possible, overcome the technical problems of aramid fiber, and achieve early realizationIndustrialization is not only crucial to the development of the entire aramid fiber industry, but also crucial to the development of my country’s national defense, aerospace and other fields.
