Pakistani textile factory suspends production for days

Recently, due to the decline in gas supply from Sui Northern Natural Gas Pipeline Company (SNGPL) in Pakistan, approximately 600 local textile factories have been suspended in the past 35 days. The textile industry has suffered billions of rupees in output and export losses, and the livelihoods of 400,000 industrial workers have been affected.

According to data released by the Pakistan Textile Processing Factories Association, the Pakistan Textile Exporters Association and the Ministry of Commerce and Industry in Faisalabad, Pakistan, the interruption of natural gas supply starting in December last year has caused a 19.2% drop in textile exports and energy shortages. This important foreign exchange-earning industry has been pushed to the brink of bankruptcy.

It is reported that in December 2011, the output and trade volume of all important sectors of Pakistan’s textile industry (including cotton yarn, cotton cloth, knitwear, bed sheets, clothing, towels, etc.) experienced a significant decline. With the arrival of the new fiscal year, the decline in manufacturing output has become more serious, and the current decline in textile industry exports has reached US$400 million.

According to official data, in December 2011, Pakistan’s bed sheet exports dropped by 32.75% compared with the same period last year, cotton exports dropped by 26% compared with the same period last year, knitwear exports dropped by 38% compared with the same period last year, clothing and Cotton thread exports fell by 6.75% and 23% respectively compared with the same period last year.

In the past six months, the overall trade volume of the textile industry was US$5.96 billion, compared with US$6.25 billion in the same period last year, a year-on-year decrease of 4.68%. This situation has also caused the number of foreign orders to show a downward trend.

It is estimated that Pakistan’s textile export target may be difficult to achieve this year. Associations called on the government to take all measures to ensure the normal operation of the manufacturing industry.
