French clothing is no longer entirely made in China and is looking for alternative production locations

According to a report by France’s “Le Figaro” on the 16th, in the future, French clothing will no longer be dominated by “Made in China”. It is true that China is still the world’s largest clothing exporter and France’s largest clothing supplier. However, due to rising labor costs in China, coupled with long distances and high transportation costs, France is now looking for cheaper alternatives.

France’s imports of Chinese textiles and clothing increased by 7% in the first 11 months of last year, but after deducting rising production costs, they actually increased by only 4%. However, the growth rate of imports from Bangladesh and Pakistan reached 26% and 29%.

The wages of workers in China’s garment processing industry have risen to 180 to 300 euros per month, which is roughly the same as in Belarus, 160 euros in Tunisia, and only 50 euros in Madagascar. More and more French clothing brands, such as Egger, “Boat” and Sirio, have begun to establish processing sites on this small island.

In addition to wages, transportation efficiency is also an important consideration. French clothing brands began to look for processing locations nearby: Eastern Europe, the Mediterranean region, and Madagascar. Romania, known as “Europe’s China”, has become France’s largest textile and clothing supplier in Europe.

In addition, the continuous expansion of China’s domestic market demand and the shortage of labor also make Chinese companies reluctant to sign long-term contracts with small and medium-sized European clothing brands.
