Nigeria’s federal government plans to revive cotton production
According to local media reports in Nigeria, the Nigerian federal government and the West African Cotton Company signed a memorandum of understanding on cotton production in Abuja in order to regain the past glory of Nigeria’s cotton production. Nigeria’s cotton production, which exceeded US$8.9 billion in the 1980s, has now dropped to only US$300 million. The number of people employed in the textile industry has also plummeted from 700,000 in the 1980s to the current 25,000.
