Textile labels exported to Europe must indicate the country of origin
The European Union will officially implement new regulations on textile labeling from May 8. For all products put on the market before May 8, 2012, the regulation provides a certain transition period, and the deadline for the transition period is November 9, 2014.
The new EU regulations require that the label of textile products must indicate the country of origin. If the product is packaged, it should be indicated on the package; other commercial documents showing the origin of the product cannot be used as a substitute for the label; the country of origin of a textile product Textiles originating in EU countries can only be considered as textiles originating in EU countries if at least two of the manufacturing processes of spinning, weaving, finishing or sewing are produced in the EU; textile labels must clearly indicate whether they contain materials such as fur and leather derived from animals. Non-textile parts, such as products imported from third countries, should be mandated to have origin labels.
The EU is my country’s largest market for textile exports. According to statistics, in 2011, my country exported nearly US$240 billion in various types of textiles, of which more than US$5 billion was exported to the EU. The implementation of the new EU regulations will not only increase the trade risks of my country’s textile exports and increase the difficulty of exports, but will also increase the production links of enterprises, increase the burden on enterprises, and extend the time for customs clearance of goods at ports.
In this regard, relevant government departments and enterprises in our country should actively respond to the new EU textile regulations and promptly adjust product labeling in accordance with the new EU regulations to avoid unnecessary economic losses.
