India’s garment exports will reach US$100 million
A. Sakthivel, chairman of the Indian Apparel Export Council (AEPC), pointed out that with the joint efforts of the Indian government and garment manufacturers, India’s garment exports are expected to grow by 20% in 2012~2013, reaching US$16 billion. From 2011 to 2012, the country’s garment exports were US$13.4 billion. Since 2012, emerging markets such as Latin America and Africa, as well as countries such as Japan and Israel, have supported the growth in demand for garments, making up for the sluggish demand in India’s traditional garment export markets, the United States and the United Kingdom.
Sakthivel said that although India’s garment exports have grown significantly, the garment industry still faces the challenges of rising global labor costs, clothing product safety and increasing environmental protection requirements for production.
In order to find solutions to these problems, strengthen the competitiveness of Indian garment exporters in the global market, and establish the international image of Indian products, AEPC will convene relevant garment industry players to hold a forum named “Disha” to understand various related industry players. Different opinions have led to the formation of a multi-faceted development strategy to help industry players face challenges and improve India’s image as a traditional source of outsourcing.
