Wuwei: Cotton growth is not as good as in previous years and production is expected to drop by 20%
From August 22 to 24, Anhui Wuwei Monitoring Station conducted a visit to a number of cotton monitoring points across the county. The survey results show that the overall cotton situation this year is worse than that of the same period last year.
There are three main reasons why cotton growth is not as good as in previous years. First, there are more rainy weather this year, resulting in less light and low temperatures. It is understood that in August last year, around the beginning of autumn, the temperature was 36-38 degrees Celsius, with sufficient light. However, since August this year, the local temperature has been only 34-35 degrees Celsius, with mostly rainy weather during this period. The growth of cotton has been slowed down due to low temperature and insufficient light. . As of now, there is no cotton with split peaches and cotton bolls in the local area. It is expected that the picking time this year will be delayed by 10-15 days. Secondly, the number and weight of cotton bolls this year are not as good as the same period last year. It is understood that last year, the average number of peaches per cotton plant was 25-30, while this year there are 22-25 peaches per cotton plant, an average decrease of 3-6 per plant. At the same time, the weight of a single cotton boll this year is not as good as last year. The top of the cotton plant The existing flower buds are less than the same period last year; third, last year’s best cotton accounted for more than 80%, but this year’s cotton generally grows in average. As of now, rainfall is still continuing in the area. If the rainfall continues in the later period, it will seriously affect the growth of cotton in the later period.
A local cotton farmer expressed concern about this year’s seed cotton production. It is understood that compared with last year’s local cotton yield per mu of 550-600 kilograms, this year’s cotton yield per mu is about 500-550 kilograms, a production reduction of 20% is expected.
