Researchers at Pennsylvania State University in the United States have developed a new type of nanomaterial that does not even stick to water vapor, making it truly “non-sticky to water.”
According to researchers, when droplets fall onto the surface of an object, two situations usually occur: First, there is still a thin layer of gas “locked” on the surface of the object, and the droplets float on this layer of gas without sticking to it. The surface of the object; first, there is no gas between the two, and the droplets are in close contact with the surface of the object and are restricted or stuck on it.
In the past, the imitation lotus leaf waterproof materials developed by people could only work in the first case, but now they have made the materials work effectively in the second case.
“The hydrophobicity of the lotus leaf surface completely relies on a layer of gas under the liquid, but this layer of gas is easily destroyed, causing it to lose its hydrophobic properties,” explained Huang Desheng, assistant professor in charge of the research. “Our research uses liquid The lubricant replaces the gas and greatly improves the surface’s ability to resist water. ”
In order to obtain this non-water-stick surface, the researchers used nanotechnology to process nanostructured “pillars” on silicon wafers, and then poured a layer of liquid lubricant into the nanostructures to reduce the viscous force on the sliding of the droplets. .
To test its performance, the researchers tilted the surface 30 degrees, placed 5 microliter water droplets on the surface and allowed it to slide. The test results confirmed that even if there is no gas under the droplet, this surface can still be “water-proof”, and its hydrophobic performance far exceeds various previous bionic structures.
