UNIQLO, a casual clothing brand, has launched ultra-light waterproof down jackets for the first time as its main product in spring.
Down jackets usually lose their lightweight and thermal insulation properties when they get wet. UNIQLO calls this product a “water protector.” This feature has waterproof lines and specially treated small sewing holes to help prevent rainwater from penetrating. Down is also processed to repel water, which can effectively maintain warmth after rainwater penetrates.
Men’s jackets and women’s short hooded jackets have a base fabric on the back of the zipper to prevent moisture from penetrating. Women’s knight jackets have a front placket attached to the zipper to prevent moisture from entering through the zipper.
The shoulder seams on men’s jackets have been reduced to reduce water droplets from penetrating through them.
UNIQLO and fabric manufacturer Toray jointly develop ultra-light down yarn. is an ultra-fine, durable, lightweight nylon yarn that is softer than cotton or man-made fibers and one-tenth the thickness of a human hair.
