A multi-layered nanofiber mask developed by researchers from Hong Kong universities that can effectively protect against haze signed a “marriage” contract with relevant companies at the Hong Kong Polytechnic University on the afternoon of October 23 to cooperate to promote the industrial application of innovative technologies. The goal is to make a prototype sample of the nanofiber mask in half a year, and the official product will be launched a year later.

The scientific research team led by Liang Huanfang, Chair Professor of Innovative Products and Technology in the Department of Mechanical Engineering of the Hong Kong Polytechnic University, has been focusing on the nanofiber technology platform and its filtration and separation technologies for many years, and is committed to research on blocking suspended particles that are called “invisible killers” of human health. , including PM10 (suspended particles with a diameter of 10 microns or less) and PM2.5 (suspended particles with a diameter of 2.5 microns or less) and even ultrafine particles with a diameter of 1 micron or less.

Liang Huanfang said that his scientific research team can use advanced nanotechnology to make nanofibers as thin as 1/500 of a hair (about 0.1 mm) from natural or synthetic materials. The multi-layer nanofiber mask developed based on this can block 90% % of nano-aerosols suspended in the air, even aerosols smaller than 0.3 microns can be effectively filtered. At the same time, through the team’s new invention, an appropriate amount of nanofibers are divided into multiple thin layers, and there is a breathable layer between each two thin layers, which can provide a large amount of flow space for air, thus making this nanofiber mask more effective. Users can breathe smoothly and can be used for any outdoor activities.

If this nanofiber technology is used to make close-fitting medical masks, it can effectively block bacteria and viruses smaller than 1 micron, and will provide stronger protection for front-line medical staff in the future. Liang Huanfang said that in addition to personal protective equipment, the mixed application of nanofiber filtration and purification technology can also purify the air in buildings and passenger cabins such as airplanes, cars, trains, ships, etc., and improve and enhance indoor air quality.
