What to check?

Down microorganisms include mesophilic aerobic bacteria, Streptococcus faecalis, Clostridium sulfite-reducing bacteria, and the limit requirements for 4 species of Salmonella.

Why check?

my country is the world’s largest producer, exporter and consumer of down and down products, with an annual output of approximately 200,000 tons of feathers and down, accounting for 80% of the world’s output. In the past, the microbial indicators of down products were not taken seriously at home and abroad. With the continuous emergence of various zoonotic cases in the field of public health in recent years, the health and safety requirements for products have also increased accordingly, and animal-derived products have become more and more popular. People pay attention. As an animal-derived product, with the outbreak of avian influenza, the health and safety issues of down have attracted more and more attention. Excessive microbial content can cause respiratory and intestinal diseases, skin allergies, itching and other symptoms, endangering human health.

Under what circumstances will it be inspected?

There is a certain relationship between the oxygen consumption in down and the microorganisms in feathers and down. It reflects the amount of dissolved oxygen in the water consumed by aerobic microorganisms through respiration. Among the four microorganisms restricted by feathers and down, except for Clostridium sulfite-reducing bacteria, which are anaerobic bacteria, the other three mesophilic aerobic bacteria, Streptococcus faecalis, and Salmonella are all aerobic microorganisms. Therefore, the standard stipulates that if the oxygen consumption exceeds 10mg/100g, microorganisms need to be detected.

However, products with excessive oxygen consumption are not necessarily caused by substandard microorganisms. After many years of laboratory inspection and testing practice, it has been found that the oxygen consumption of some down products exceeds 10mg/100g. When these down products were tested for microorganisms, no microbial failure was found. After analysis, it was found that some finishing agents or post-treatment agents may have been added to these products. This chemical substance can cause an oxidation-reduction reaction with potassium permanganate, causing the oxygen consumption to exceed the standard during the test.
