Xinjiang has another bumper cotton harvest, with total output expected to reach 5.2006 million tons

Learned from the “Thirteenth Five-Year Plan” press conference on the development results of “agriculture, rural areas and farmers” in the region and the start of the “14th Five-Year Plan”: this year the region The cotton planting area is expected to reach 37.18 million acres, with a total output of 5.2006 million tons. The region’s cotton production achieved a total output increase of 39,600 tons despite a reduction of 349,000 acres in planting area. The quality and efficiency continued to improve, and cotton production achieved another bumper harvest.

This year is the year of cotton quality improvement in the autonomous region. The agricultural and rural departments in the region focus on the high-quality development of cotton, guide the production layout to concentrate on advantageous cotton areas, optimize the cotton variety structure, improve cotton quality, and promote the double improvement of cotton quality and efficiency. The number of cotton varieties covering more than 10,000 acres in the region has dropped to 45 from 64 last year.

The Autonomous Region’s Agriculture and Rural Affairs Department selected hundreds of agricultural technicians to manage key farming periods in cotton fields. They went to 34 cotton-growing counties and cities, and worked in mixed groups with local agricultural technicians to carry out full-coverage technical service guidance. This year, while continuously improving the quality and efficiency of cotton production, the region continues to increase the promotion of machine-picked cotton, guides the development of large-scale cotton planting, and demonstrates the transformation of cotton production in southern Xinjiang from decentralized operations by small farmers to moderate-scale operations. It is expected that the cotton mechanical harvesting rate in the entire region (local area) will exceed 75%, reaching 60% in southern Xinjiang, and over 80% in the entire region. The cotton mechanical harvesting rate will further increase compared with the previous year.

In terms of price, after the cotton harvest started this year, cotton prices in the region continued to rise, and then fell slightly. As of October 12, the region has purchased a total of 2.2227 million tons of seed cotton (fine lint cotton). The average purchase price of seed cotton in the region has remained high, reaching 10.66 yuan/kg, which is higher than the same period last year.
