Nowadays, people’s demand for various types of textiles is no longer just about aesthetics, but also requires functionality such as safety and health care. The whimsical-sounding textiles such as clothing fabrics, curtains, bed sheets, and car carpets that can purify the air for a long time, degrade formaldehyde, self-clean, protect against ultraviolet rays, and have efficient antibacterial and deodorizing properties are no longer a dream.
Recently, the textile chemistry and dyeing and finishing engineering scientific research and innovation team led by Shen Yong, a professor at the School of Fashion, Shanghai University of Engineering and Technology, has continued to make useful attempts in green textiles and functional expansion with the support of several relevant cooperative units in Shanghai. The scientific research achievement “Processing Key Technologies and Industrialization of High-Performance Nanophotocatalyst Functional Textiles” won the second prize of Shanghai Science and Technology Progress Award.
Textiles that can purify the air
Self-cleaning, air purification, antibacterial, deodorization, UV resistance, etc. are all “magical” functions of textiles explored by the scientific research team. The team developed a nanophotocatalytic material that can degrade organic matter under the action of light, causing harmful organic matter such as formaldehyde and benzene in the air to be decomposed into water and carbon dioxide, thereby purifying the air.
“People often hear in news reports that some children got leukemia and other diseases after riding in a newly bought car or living in a newly renovated house. Although medicine is not yet certain that formaldehyde, benzene and other substances cause these diseases. The main reason is, but we still hope to find a material that can purify the air well and prevent air pollution from causing diseases.” Speaking of the original intention of the team’s research, Professor Shen Yong seemed very determined. At the same time, he also said that in the manufacturing process, nano-photocatalytic materials and textile fibers are firmly combined, and can be used as an efficient and durable photocatalytic and other multi-functional textiles to degrade or decompose volatile organic compounds in the environment, and can be applied In daily life and some special occasions, it can achieve the effect of “purifying the air”; at the same time, the photocatalytic functional textile also has multiple functions such as UV protection, antibacterial and deodorization.
Ten years of research to achieve breakthrough
However, many technical difficulties need to be overcome to achieve uniform dispersion of nanoparticles and strong bonding with fibers. It is understood that many research teams have also tried many methods, such as using solution blending or melt blending methods to mix nanomaterials and fiber polymers to produce functional fibers and fabrics. However, nanomaterials are easily agglomerated and may It is accompanied by impurities and is difficult to control; some research teams also use adhesives to attach nanomaterials to the surface of fabrics. However, such adhesion will make the fabrics feel rough and difficult to care for and clean. Through nearly 10 years of research, Shen Yong’s research team has used chemical methods of structural modification to bring nanomaterials with reactive chemical groups that can directly react with fibers to achieve tight covalent bonds. This chemical combination not only It ensures the feel of the fabric, does not contain any added adhesive, and takes advantage of the characteristics of the fabric’s raw materials, which is green and environmentally friendly.
According to Shen Yong, the key to this project is to achieve breakthroughs in related technologies in the process of uniform dispersion of nanoparticles and their firm combination with fibers, and the completion of a number of technological innovations. Developed the “one-step” hydrolysis preparation application technology and production technology of modified nano-titanium dioxide for functional finishing of textiles, developed a feasible finishing process of modified nano-titanium dioxide on textiles, and solved the problem of uniform dispersion of nanoparticles on fibers and their In order to solve the problem of strong combination with fibers, we have developed a series of fabric photocatalysts, antibacterial, and anti-UV multifunctional finishing agents, and established a production base for nanometer multifunctional textile clothing fabrics, home textiles, and automotive interior textiles.
The industry-university-research model is indispensable
When talking about the cooperation with Shanghai University of Engineering and Technology and several companies in Shanghai, Shen Yong said: “The industry-university-research model is indispensable. Our project team adopts the project leader responsibility system and makes full use of the existing industry-university-research cooperation of the project unit in product development. Integrated conditions, the developed technology can be quickly applied to large-scale production, shortening the process and time of completing technology and product development. In terms of product production, the existing production conditions of the project unit are mainly used, and more professional processing is entrusted to professionals. Manufacturers produce according to technical requirements, which can not only ensure the normal investment and cost of the project, but also promote the joint development of other related industries. By regularly summarizing the experience of the project, the research results can be transformed in a timely manner through the industry-university-research and application platform to transform technological achievements. Provide a good atmosphere and necessary supporting measures.”
The achievement of this result not only reflects the scientific research strength of the scientific research team, but also demonstrates the school-running model of Shanghai University of Engineering and Technology and Fashion Institute of Technology, which uses the industry-university-research strategic alliance as a platform and connects the discipline chain and professional chain with the industrial chain, and always adheres to relying on Shanghai’s modern industry. , the purpose of running a school that actively serves the regional economy. Shen Yong said that the team will continue to rely on the Shanghai R&D Public Service Platform “Shanghai Fashion Creative Design and Digital Technology Public Service Platform” established in 2013.
It is reported that with the joint efforts of Shen Yong and his team, this research has applied for more than ten invention patents, six of which have been authorized. Several of them have also filled China’s gaps in this field. Shen Yong and team members also said , “At present, we have reached a consensus with relevant companies and will cooperate to continue in-depth research on the application of nanomaterials in textile materials, manufacture relevant raw materials, develop and give more functions to textiles, expand their application fields, and hope to have more nanomaterials. “Functional textile products will be available soon”. These achievements have realized the industrialization of large-scale production of nanocomposite multifunctional textile products. The product quality has reached the international level, the application prospects are broad, and the social and economic benefits are significant.
