Dacun Village is located in a low-latitude plateau area, with an average annual temperature of 15.4°C and an annual precipitation of 591 mm. The geographical environment and climate are suitable for the growth of mulberry trees, so planting mulberry and raising silkworms has always been a traditional industry in Dacun Village.
Before 2018, more than 100 households in Dacun Village made a living by raising silkworms, but each household could only produce four batches of cocoons a year. “In the past, in order to sell at a good price, we sometimes traveled dozens of kilometers to find a company to buy it. As a result, everyone was not very enthusiastic about planting mulberry and raising silkworms.” Zhou Juhui said.
This situation has been changed as the Yao’an County Government teamed up with the local Poverty Alleviation Office, Meteorological Bureau, Agriculture and Rural Affairs Bureau, Forestry Bureau and other departments to explore a new model. As a pilot project in the county, Dacun promotes multi-batch sericulture. For more than three years, the meteorological cadres stationed in the village cooperated with the village cadres and technical personnel from the forestry, agriculture and rural affairs, and human resources and social security bureaus to promote the multi-batch sericulture model. Through methods such as large households leading small households, and technological households leading surrounding households, the average household in Dacun Village currently cultivates 4 acres of mulberry, and 206 households have invested in the sericulture industry in 8 batches of spring, summer, autumn and late autumn. Mulberry silkworms are sensitive to temperature and humidity. Especially under high temperature and humid conditions, eating mulberry leaves with high moisture content will reduce the osmotic pressure of the blood, causing the silkworms to be weak and easily induce silkworm diseases. On the contrary, if silkworms eat mulberry leaves with insufficient moisture in a dry breeding environment, the silkworms will be weak and have poor cocoon quality.
In this regard, the Yao’an County Meteorological Bureau provides targeted direct services to silkworm farmers, regularly sending meteorological information and farming advice in the WeChat group. In addition to providing regular weather forecasts, early warning information and agricultural production suggestions, it also focuses on strengthening weather forecasts such as drought, continuous rain, high temperature and high humidity, low temperature and high humidity, etc., so that silkworm farmers can grasp weather changes in a timely manner and manage silkworms in a timely manner according to weather conditions.
All major silkworm farmers in the village have installed the “Yao’an Weather” App. They can learn about weather changes through the App anytime and anywhere, and receive weather forecasts, weather warnings and weather service information in a timely manner. Since the beginning of this year, the Yao’an County Meteorological Bureau has issued a total of 9 climate trend forecasts, 51 weekly weather forecasts, and 9 agricultural direct meteorological services.
Today, 206 sericulture households have achieved an annual output value of 1.95 million yuan, and the average income of each sericulture farmer has increased by 10,000 yuan. The advanced and practical multi-batch sericulture technology has been transformed into economic benefits.
