A senior student won the “Nobel Prize” in the textile industry. Only two people in the country won this honor this year
Reporters learned on November 29 that Guo Shimao, a senior student majoring in textile engineering at Wuhan Textile University, recently obtained the “Textile Certificate” issued by the China Textile Industry Federation. “Light” Student Special Award – This award is known as the “Nobel Prize” in the textile industry. Only two people in the country won this award this year.
People who are familiar with Guo Shimao say that he strives to do his best in everything he does: he has ranked first in his major in comprehensive evaluation for three consecutive years; he participated in the “Chang’e 5” lunar flag research team and was featured on CCTV News ; He is one of the “Top Ten Flag Raisers in Colleges and Universities in the Country” and a provincial champion in rope skipping. He won 4 gold medals at the Hubei Provincial Rope Skipping Championships in two years and broke the tournament record twice.
Doing scientific research starts with washing cups
Guo Shimao said that each of his achievements comes from repetition and persistence. “In the first half year of entering the laboratory, I mainly washed beakers and weighed materials. It seemed very boring, but think of it like cooking. It’s interesting, I actually got a lot of specialty dishes later on.”
His mentor, Associate Professor Cao Genyang, a member of Professor Xu Weilin’s team at Wuhan Textile State Key Laboratory of New Materials and Advanced Processing Technology, said that Xiao Guo is stable and can endure hardships. After the lunar flag was successfully developed, the school established a functional fabric developmenttalent training studio to recruit undergraduate students to develop and apply technical textiles derived from the lunar flag. When Xiao Guo came to register in early 2020, Professor Cao recognized him immediately. Later, in the experiment, Xiao Guo was able to execute the plan very accurately.
What makes Xiao Guo even more excited is that at 23:10 on December 3, 2020, the national flag was successfully unfurled on the moon. He cherishes this experience of studying in the National Key Laboratory and firmly remembers what teacher Xu Weilin said: “toughness, tolerance, and benevolence”, that is, a person must be as flexible as fiber materials and have strong resistance to blows; If you have sex, you can study calmly in the face of external temptations; you must also have a benevolent heart so that you can take on greater tasks in the future.
This year, Guo Shimao applied for textile-related majors at three prestigious universities in the UK and has received an offer from the University of Southampton.
5,000 rope skippings every morning
Guo Shimao is one of the “Flag Raisers among the Top Ten National Colleges and Universities” and is also “taking small steps to reach a thousand miles” in terms of sports and club activities. When he was a freshman, he joined the school’s flag guard and rope skipping club, training every morning and evening. I always insist on getting up at 6:30 in the morning, going to bed at 11:30 in the evening, and taking a half-hour lunch break at noon. Every morning, he still completes 5,000 single-rock speed jumps at a speed of 300 times/minute without stopping, and his arms and back are often pulled out by ropes with several red marks.
Accompanied by this “spicy breakfast”, Guo Shimao, who had no previous rope skipping experience, participated in the Hubei Provincial Rope Skipping Championships for the first time in 2020, and cooperated with the team members to win the gold medal in the figure eight long rope in the collective event and the bronze medal in the 4-person single swing relay. In the individual event, he won the gold medal in the 30-second double shake and the bronze medal in the 30-second single shake, and broke the competition record of the 30-second double shake. In 2021, he participated again and won the collective horoscope gold medal and the individual double shake gold medal, and once again broke his own record. Tournament records.
How to balance study, scientific research and extracurricular activities? Guo Shimao has experience: he will make a list of tasks in his mind every day, and actively complete them from primary to secondary, and never procrastinate in doing things.
