On December 23, the U.S. government signed into law the “Uyghur Forced Labor Prevention Act,” which requires the United States to ban imports of all imports from China on the grounds of so-called “forced labor.” Products from Xinjiang grossly interfere in China’s internal affairs and will continue to have a negative impact on my country’s cotton textile industry. In response, the China Cotton Association expressed strong condemnation and firm opposition.
Since the beginning of 2020, the U.S. government has restricted the import of cotton-related products from the Xinjiang region by issuing Xinjiang-related supply chain reports, including them on the entity list, and issuing import bans. This has caused huge economic losses and extremely negative impacts to related companies, which has seriously It has damaged the reputation of Xinjiang and even my country’s cotton textile industry.
As a dominant cotton production area in my country, Xinjiang’s cotton output is around 5 million tons all year round. Affected by rising labor costs and other factors, Xinjiang’s cotton production has progressed rapidly in scale and mechanization in recent years. Precision sowing, drip irrigation under the film, drone spraying, and cotton picking machine harvesting are all mechanized. Intelligent operation has greatly reduced the labor intensity of cotton farmers and improved agricultural production efficiency. In 2021, the cotton mechanical harvesting rate in Xinjiang is as high as 87.9%, and the average net income of cotton farmers is expected to exceed 1,500 yuan/mu. It has become the main source of income increase for local farmers in Xinjiang, especially farmers in Uyghur-inhabited areas such as Hotan, Aksu, Kashgar, and Kezhou in southern Xinjiang. source. Xinjiang’s cotton textile production capacity is about 20.38 million spindles, and its yarn output is 1.95 million tons, providing local employment of about 600,000 people.
As the world’s second largest cotton producer and the largest cotton importer and textile producer, my country’s cotton textile industry has made great progress since joining the WTO. For political purposes, the U.S. government has continuously issued administrative orders and bills targeting Xinjiang cotton in the name of so-called “forced labor”, which has seriously disrupted the cotton textile production and trade order in China and even the world. It completely ignores the impact of its crude interference on China, including China. the legitimate rights and interests of relevant enterprises and practitioners around the world, including China’s cotton and textile industry will continue to adhere to openness and cooperation with the outside world. External suppression and smear cannot and will not hinder the high-quality and sustainable development of China’s cotton and textile industry in the future.
