Su embroidery helps figure skaters perform ink landscape painting on ice
On February 7, on the third day of the Beijing Winter Olympics, the figure skating team competition also started the competition for the finals. In this competition, the clothing worn by Peng Cheng was inspired by ink landscape elements. It used traditional tie-dye technology to reflect the feeling of ink gradient, and incorporated the intangible cultural heritage – Su embroidery for decoration. The Suzhou embroidery elements on this competition uniform came from the team of Yao Qinhua Embroidery Art Museum in Zhenhu Street.
In 2020, the Yao Qinhua Embroidery Art Museum team was entrusted by the Beijing Institute of Fashion Technology to assist the project team in researching figure skating competition uniforms.
The design of figure skating uniforms must not only be familiar with the dances and music styles of the competition, but also take into account the athletes’ body shape, personality, preferences, aesthetics, etc. It is usually designed, collided, and fit together. Yao Qinhua introduced that Su embroidery is used to decorate competition uniforms. The finished product should not only ensure that athletes can move widely, but also enhance artistic expression. Competition clothing is made of high elasticity, and many are mesh, which greatly increases the difficulty and time of embroidery. For two years from 2020 to 2021, Yao Qinhua’s embroidery art team made a lot of innovations, tried different stitches and silk threads, and overcame difficulties one after another, providing guarantee for the national ice and snow team to prepare for the Beijing Winter Olympics.
