EU officially limits NPEO content in textiles
On January 14, 2016, the European Union officially announced the release of the amendment (EU) 2016/26 to the REACH regulations, adding REACH Appendix XVII clause 46a, which stipulates that textiles with NPEO content exceeding 0.01% will be Banned from the EU market. The specific terms are as shown in the table below:
What is NPEO?
NPEO is often used as a surfactant in textile production and processing, such as detergents, industrial cleaning agents, dispersants, wetting agents and other industrial chemicals. NPEO has endocrine disrupting effects, can promote the proliferation of breast cancer cells, and is a carcinogen. As a surfactant, once NPEO enters the environment, it will quickly decompose into a more toxic environmental hormone – NP. NP is a world-recognized environmental hormone that can cause endocrine system disorders, hinder reproduction, development and other functions, and even cause malignant tumors.
Reminder:
The EU has already restricted the use of NPEO and NP, but only to industrial cleaning, household washing, emulsifiers for agricultural drops, metal processing, papermaking, personal care products and auxiliary ingredients of pesticides and biocides. Restricting its use in textiles will have a greater impact on Chinese manufacturing companies. Therefore, companies should strengthen control to ensure that semi-finished products or finished products exported to the EU comply with the requirements of this regulation.
