The high price of Indonesian cotton yarn stimulates an increase in cotton consumption
Indonesian textile factories mainly produce yarn and sewing thread. From 2012 to 2013, Indonesian textile mills increased from 251 to 260, and yarn production increased from 3.1 million tons to 3.5 million tons. In 2013, the operating rate of Indonesian textile mills was 86.2%, with a total of 10.97 million spindles and 179,000 spinning cups, higher than the 10.21 million spindles and 175,000 spinning cups in 2012.
In 2013, Indonesia’s total fiber consumption was 2.6 million tons, of which cotton accounted for 26%, chemical fiber 73%, and other fibers 1.1%. More than 30% of Indonesian yarn is exported. With the increase in electricity bills and cotton import tariffs, Indonesian yarn production costs have increased since May 2014.
China’s cotton policy adjustments and high global cotton inventories have caused cotton prices to fall, but cotton yarn prices are still high relative to blended yarn prices. Therefore, many textile mills began to adjust their production models and increase the production of pure cotton yarn. Japan, Belgium, Italy and the United States are the main destination countries for Indonesian cotton cloth exports.
Indonesian cotton consumption is expected to be approximately 675,000 tons in 2016/17. Net cotton imports may exceed 675,000 tons. The high price of Indonesian pure cotton yarn stimulates an increase in cotton consumption
