% of school uniforms in Kazakhstan’s domestic market are domestically produced
Kazakhstan’s Kapital.kz reported that based on an analysis of manufacturing industries such as chemical industry, furniture manufacturing, wood processing industry and papermaking industry, 32 products in Kazakhstan have the potential for import substitution. At present, 70% of the procurement of furniture and light industrial products is completed by the government and state-owned enterprises, making it difficult for Kazakhstani manufacturers to compete in the B2B (business-to-business) market. Therefore, the government has decided to ensure that 50% of school uniforms in the Kazakh market will be domestically produced in 2016.
Moldakhmetov, secretary-general of the Manufacturing Committee of the Atameken Entrepreneurs Association, said that Kazakhstan’s light industry is dominated by small businesses. The total number of light industry companies has reached 886, including about 7 large companies and 30 medium-sized companies. . The furniture manufacturing industry and the entire light industry basically rely on state procurement and procurement from state-owned enterprises such as Kazakhstan Railway and Samruk Energy Company. Therefore, a school uniform import substitution program was developed and implemented. It is estimated that the market value of Kazakhstan’s school uniform market is about 37.5 billion tenge, of which 17 billion tenge will be earned by domestic companies. At present, there are 2,500 primary and secondary school students in Kazakhstan, and the average school uniform costs 15,000 tenge.
The Atameken Entrepreneurs Association has developed and submitted a school uniform import substitution plan to the government in order to develop a list of domestic school uniform manufacturers according to standards. The association also suggested that Kazakhstan manufacturers hold meetings with school principals and parents to directly cooperate, and suggested organizing trading companies to sell school uniforms at preferential prices in specific shopping malls under preferential conditions. This proposal received government support and was promoted in various regions.
On April 5, Astana will hold its first school uniform forum and showcase school uniforms produced in the country.
