Zhejiang’s foreign trade is picking up and cross-border e-commerce is showing strong momentum
Reporters recently learned from the first-quarter foreign economic and trade situation analysis meeting of Zhejiang Province that Zhejiang Province’s foreign trade is now on the rise. According to statistics from Hangzhou Customs, the total import and export value of Zhejiang Province in the first quarter was 456.32 billion yuan, a year-on-year decrease of 4.3%; of which, exports were 358.56 billion yuan, a year-on-year decrease of 4.1%, and imports were 97.76 billion yuan, a year-on-year decrease of 5.1%. Although the total import and export value, export value, and import value in the first quarter all showed a downward trend, the declines were 1.6, 0.1, and 3.1 percentage points smaller than the national level respectively. This also caused Zhejiang Province’s foreign trade import and export share in the country’s foreign trade to increase by 0.2 percentage points year-on-year in the first quarter, accounting for 8.8%, ranking fourth in the country.
In the first two months of this year, the year-on-year export growth rates of Zhejiang Province were -4.4% and -29.1% respectively. In March, the year-on-year growth rate was as high as 40.8%. “Judging from the experience of the past 10 years, due to the influence of the Spring Festival holiday, the growth rate of Zhejiang Province’s foreign trade exports mostly fluctuates significantly in the first quarter of each year.” Zhang Handong, director of the Provincial Business Research Institute, told reporters. This year is still a normal fluctuation, which is in line with the general rules of Zhejiang Province’s foreign trade exports in the first quarter.
“Exports bottomed out and rebounded sharply in March, and the export recovery trend has initially been established.” said the relevant person in charge of the Provincial Department of Commerce.
“The continued sluggish external demand is the main reason for the year-on-year decline in export growth in the first quarter.” Customs statistics experts analyzed, “However, Zhejiang’s foreign trade exports still have some remarkable highlights.”
In the first quarter, Zhejiang Province exported 25.52 billion yuan of high-tech products, a year-on-year growth of 11.6%, accounting for 7.1% of the province’s total export value, an increase of 1 percentage point from the end of last year, leading export growth. The exports of seven categories of traditional labor-intensive products accounted for 37.4% of the province’s total export value, and the export proportion dropped by 1 percentage point from the end of last year. Led by the country’s first cross-border e-commerce comprehensive pilot zone in Hangzhou, cross-border e-commerce in Zhejiang Province has shown a strong momentum of incremental growth and sustainable development.
