Exports once again experienced negative growth, ending with a total decline of .%

In December, driven by the negative impact of clothing, the overall exports of textiles and clothing fell again, and the decline was relatively large. According to data released by the General Administration of Customs, in RMB terms, exports for the month were 160.26 billion yuan, a year-on-year decrease of 6.7% (the same below), of which textile exports were 62.61 billion yuan, an increase of 0.1%, and clothing exports were 97.65 billion yuan, a decrease of 10.6%. In 2016, the total exports of textiles and clothing were 1,731.07 billion yuan, ending with a decrease of 1.7%. Among them, textile exports were 692.12 billion yuan, an increase of 1.9%, and clothing exports were 1,038.95 billion yuan, a decrease of 3.9%.

The main reasons for the decline in textile and apparel exports in 2016 include:

1. The economic recovery of major export markets is slow, external demand is weak, and downward pressure on foreign trade is increasing;

2. The external environment is unstable and uncertain factors affecting exports are increasing;

3. Enterprise production costs continue to increase, and traditional advantages are further weakened;

4. The transfer of industries and products has led to the gradual reduction of our products’ share in the main market;

5. Export commodity prices fell significantly.

In terms of US dollars, textile and clothing exports in December were US$23.44 billion, down 12.8%, of which textile exports were US$9.16 billion, down 6.4%, and clothing exports were US$14.28 billion, down 16.5%. From January to December, the cumulative exports of textiles and clothing were US$262.45 billion, down 7.5%, of which textile exports were US$104.99 billion, down 4.1%, and clothing exports were US$157.46 billion, down 9.6%.
