According to my country’s customs statistics, in 2016, China’s textile and clothing exports to the EU were US$49.503 billion, a year-on-year decrease of 6.83%, which was narrower than the 9.43% decline in 2015. In 2016, China’s yarn export volume to the EU was 474 million kilograms, a year-on-year increase of 10.97%, and the export value was US$1.145 billion, a year-on-year increase of 2.56%. In 2016, China exported US$7.067 billion of manufactured products to the EU, a slight increase of 0.26% year-on-year. China’s apparel exports to the EU were US$37.393 billion, a year-on-year decrease of 9.15%. The decline was slightly narrower than last year. A total of 15.249 billion pieces (sets) were exported, a year-on-year increase of 3.70%. The export unit price was US$2.45/piece (set), a year-on-year increase of 3.70%. It fell by 12.39%, reaching the lowest level in six years.

Knitted garment exports were 4.184 billion pieces (sets), a year-on-year decrease of 2.41%, and the export volume was US$14.803 billion, a year-on-year decrease of 10.28%. The average price was US$3.54/piece (set). The export of woolen knitted clothing was US$658 million, a year-on-year increase of 4.71%, becoming the only category of growth; the export of chemical fiber knitted clothing was US$7.443 billion, a year-on-year decrease of 7.09%, and the export unit price dropped by 7.56%; the export of cotton knitted clothing was US$5.432 billion, It decreased by 15.54% year-on-year, and the unit price decreased by 11.19%.

Exports of woven garments were 2.956 billion pieces (sets), a year-on-year increase of 2.62%. The export volume was US$17.578 billion, a year-on-year decrease of 9.22%. The average price was US$5.95/piece (set), a year-on-year decrease of 11.54%. The export volume of other clothing decreased by 2.56% year-on-year, and the export value decreased by 9.31%. Among them, the export volume of chemical fiber woven clothing reached 1.916 billion pieces (sets), a year-on-year increase of 6.11%, and the export value was US$9.193 billion, a decrease of 8.59%; the export volume of cotton woven clothing decreased by 4.35% year-on-year, and the export value decreased by 11.99%. It was US$5.199 billion; the export value of silk woven garments was US$315 million, a slight decrease of 0.03% year-on-year.

5. Processing trade continues to decline

Last year, I still focused on general trade with the EU, supplemented by processing trade. The annual export volume of general trade was US$42.859 billion, a year-on-year decrease of 6.49%, accounting for 86.58% of China’s total textile and apparel exports to the EU. Processing trade declined for the second consecutive year. Export volume fell by 16.16% year-on-year to only US$3.769 billion, the lowest level since 2006. Export volume fell by 11.38% year-on-year, and the performance was unsatisfactory.

6. Private enterprises still dominate

Last year, a total of 41,778 companies in my country were engaged in textile and apparel export trade to the EU, a year-on-year increase of 2.75%. Among them, private enterprises continued to rank first in exports, with an export value of US$32.727 billion, accounting for 66.11% of China’s textile and clothing exports to the EU, an increase of 1.16 percentage points over last year, and the number of entrepreneurs also increased to 33,887, a year-on-year increase of 4.80%. The export volume of foreign-funded enterprises and state-owned enterprises was US$9.527 billion and US$7.213 billion respectively, a year-on-year decrease of 11.50% and 6.93%.

7. Jiangsu’s export volume declined the smallest among major provinces and cities

Looking at the provinces exporting to the EU, the top six provinces and cities exporting to the EU are still Zhejiang, Guangdong, Jiangsu, Fujian, Shanghai and Shandong, but their export volumes have all declined: Zhejiang’s export volume was US$14.778 billion, year-on-year. A decrease of 5.98%; the exports of Guangdong and Shanghai dropped significantly, with a year-on-year decrease of 10.59% and 10.62% respectively, with exports of US$8.503 billion and US$3.718 billion; Jiangsu had the smallest decrease, with a slight decrease of 0.59% year-on-year, with exports of US$8.243 billion. Among the remaining provinces and cities, Hunan’s exports increased the most, with a year-on-year increase of 45.52%, with an export volume of US$288 million, ranking among the top 15.
