Why is Chinese cotton becoming more and more “hardcore”?
Opening up the blockage between the supply side and the demand side will clear up the pain points in the development of the cotton industry. In layman’s terms, what the demander needs, the producer will produce, the seed company will provide, and the scientific research unit will develop.
As the world’s largest cotton consumer and second largest cotton producer, it is imperative to launch an independent national cotton brand and establish an authoritative and influential national cotton standard and certification system.
October 7, 2019, Geneva, Switzerland.
In the exhibition hall with low-key light yellow as the main color, the walls are decorated with several brightly colored paintings, conveying a warm and comfortable feeling, just like the cotton blooming on the booth, soft cotton cloth, and comfortable cotton shirt belts The feeling of touch.
“The Chinese Cotton CCIA brand has made a stunning appearance on the international stage. This time, it is finally proud.” In front of the Chinese booth at the first World Cotton Day event, Peng Jun, deputy director of the Cotton Research Institute of the Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences, was full of thoughts. In the small exhibition hall, despite the collection of cotton with the best quality and the loudest brands from all over the world, China Cotton’s CCIA series products are still the best, attracting attention and discussing cooperation from more than 50 countries including the United States, India, and Mali.
For the National Cotton Industry Alliance, which accepted the invitation of the WTO Chinese delegation to participate in the exhibition, this is more like an “examination” than a display. There are high-quality cotton seeds and cotton on the booth, as well as ultra-high-count yarns, high-end fabrics, and high-quality clothing. Behind this series of CCIA products in the entire chain from production, processing to consumer markets are cotton scientific research and planting. The results of the transformation and upgrading of the entire industrial chain of , textile and clothing production.
Our country is the world’s largest cotton consumer and the world’s second largest cotton producer, with the most complete cotton industry chain. From a good pure cotton T-shirt at the market end, you can trace back to a good cotton seed and the scientific research institute that cultivated the cotton seed. The upgrading of the cotton industry means unblocking and cooperating among the upstream, midstream and downstream links in the entire industry chain, including scientific research, production, processing, circulation, textiles, clothing, and trade.
“Otherwise, it’s like the railway police, each in charge of a section. Those who grow cotton don’t care whether the cotton is good or not, and those who weave don’t care whether the fabric is good or not to make ready-made clothes. This leads to a mismatch between production and demand and cannot satisfy the people’s demand for high-quality cotton clothes and cotton. The demand for quilts and cotton fabrics.” said Huang Qun, director of the Secretariat of the National Cotton Alliance of the China Cotton Research Institute and deputy secretary-general of the National Cotton Industry Alliance.
Opening up the blockage between the supply side and the demand side will clear up the pain points in the development of the cotton industry. In layman’s terms, what the demand side needs is what the production side produces, what seed companies provide, and what scientific research units develop. According to this basic idea, the entire cotton industry chain is laid out to promote “technology side + production side + demand side”. “Integrated layout.
This is a huge systematic project involving many links and subjects, and complex interest relationships. Although difficult, after nearly five years of efforts driven by the National Cotton Industry Alliance, results have been seen. A production base of about 3 million acres with an annual output of more than 400,000 tons of CCIA high-quality cotton has been established, equivalent to two-thirds of Australia’s cotton production capacity; our country’s own brand of national cotton CCIA has been launched, and its influence is gradually expanding; industry With the coordinated cooperation between the upper, middle and lower reaches, more and more enterprises and planting entities are joining the chain of determining production based on demand… my country is making steady progress from a major cotton planting and textile country to a strong cotton planting and textile power.
Where does the high quality of cotton come from?
October 10, 2021, Changji, Xinjiang.
“Increase the price by 500 yuan!” “800 yuan!” “1,000 yuan!”… A unique CCIA high-quality cotton bidding conference was held here. More than 20 downstream textile and garment companies came to participate in the bidding, 5,000 tons ” Double 30″ and above high-quality cotton was sold out, with a maximum price increase of 2,500 yuan per ton.
Will cotton also be auctioned? That’s right! Although high-quality cotton is not a scarce product, it is definitely a hot commodity in the market. It is not uncommon to “grab” cotton at a higher price. In Huang Qun’s view, the key to high-quality cotton lies in a good seed. The main variety of this auction, “Zhongmian 113”, is also a variety that has been exhibited on World Cotton Day on behalf of China’s cotton, and its main planting bases are in Changji, Bozhou and other places in Xinjiang.
“One of the key reasons for poor cotton quality is that the varieties are messy.” Huang Qun said, “Due to inconsistent varieties, the quality of cotton grown is uneven, which cannot meet the consistency of cotton quality required by back-end spinning and weaving enterprises. Requirements. To improve quality, the first thing is to unify the varieties, and they are high-quality cotton varieties.”
To this end, Xinjiang has vigorously promoted “one main and two auxiliary”, that is, cotton-growing counties plant cotton with one main variety and two matching varieties, and encourage the development of “one county, one product” and “multi-county one product”, starting from the source improve cotton quality. “It should be noted that while the main promoted varieties ensure high quality, they must also be recognized by cotton farmers. Pilot demonstrations can be used to let farmers see the effects before gradually rolling them out. We must also prevent…, influential cotton brands are needed to improve the development quality of the entire industry and lead the direction of industry development.
CCIA is an independent brand created after the establishment of the China Cotton Alliance. The CCIA trademark has been registered in the entire cotton production, processing, textile, printing and dyeing, yarn, home textile, and cloth chain. At present, relevant enterprises have been authorized to promote the national cotton brand, and the “CCIA Green Cotton Product R&D Center” has been established to complete large-scale trial production of high-quality fabrics and clothing from CCIA cotton to 140, 160, and 200 yarn counts. Huang Qun said that currently, CCIA has carried out brand “co-branding” cooperation with 361 Degrees, Luolai Home Textiles, Li Ning, Anta, Heilan Home and other companies.
The core of a brand is excellent quality, and the measurement of quality requires authoritative standards. Wang Jinhua said that over the years, US cotton and Australian cotton have established and shaped their own standard systems. We also have our own standards in China, but the promotion efforts are far from enough, so we are relatively passive in certification.
“To sort it out, there are more than 1,000 various standards related to cotton in my country, but there is a problem of focusing on standard formulation rather than implementation. The guiding power of the standards is not strong, and it cannot form effective constraints on the various entities in the supply chain.” Huang Qun pointed out.
To this end, the National Cotton Industry Alliance adopts “qualitative + quantitative” methods focusing on two aspects: “bases” such as CCIA cotton production, processing, and textiles, and “products” such as varieties, seeds, raw cotton, yarn, fabrics, and clothing. Based on the principles, the national cotton CCIA standard system and certification system have been formulated and run through the entire cotton industry chain to ensure the full standardized production and traceability of CCIA cotton and its products.
The certification process must be strictly implemented in accordance with the procedures and standards, and “certification certificates” will be issued in batches for qualified candidates. For example, after the cotton in a high-quality cotton production base is produced, a certificate will be issued if it meets the standard. If it does not meet the CCIA standard, it will not be issued. This is true for lint processing and other downstream links. “This can ensure the consistency of standards and the value of certification.” Huang Qun said.
At present, the national cotton CCIA standard has been initially formulated. Huang Qun said that the next step is to make the standard system more complete, more international, more influential and competitive, let more companies in the industry chain recognize and join the CCIA standard system certification, and absorb more foreign brands enterprise. It is also necessary to further expand the construction of high-quality cotton bases, improve the traceability system, establish product supply chains, establish the international concept of “Chinese cotton, Chinese technology, Chinese products, Chinese brands” and create a national cotton CCIA brand.
