Old coarse cloth hand-woven skills: innovative inheritance to weave a better new life
The weather is getting warmer and the flowers on both sides of the road are in full bloom. In the Tiancai Lao coarse cloth professional cooperative in Yong’an Town, Yang Osmanthus is telling new apprentices what to pay attention to in the weaving process. As the fourth generation inheritor of the old coarse cloth hand-woven skills, Yang Guihua established this cooperative in 2014 and began to explore a new path for large-scale production of old coarse cloth.
“When we established this old coarse cloth professional cooperative, we first wanted to pass on this technology and let more young people understand our old coarse cloth textile craftsmanship. Secondly, we also wanted to help the sisters in the village. If we can have a stable income during the slack period, we should do our best to contribute to the village.” Recalling the original intention of establishing the cooperative, Yang Osmanthus said with a little pride.
With the update of textile machinery and the application of chemical dyes, the textile technology of old coarse cloth has been greatly improved. The weaving process was gradually simplified into the four steps of spinning, drawing machine, brushing machine and weaving. “To weave cloth, we must first spin the thread. Our cotton thread is hand-spun by workers on spinning wheels. Only by keeping calm during the spinning process can the spun thread be both symmetrical and tough. The second step is to pull the machine , you need to be careful when pulling the machine. The style and length of the cloth are determined by this step. Only by placing the thread in the hand in the correct position can problems such as color confusion not occur. The most important of these is weaving. , when weaving, you should pay attention to calmness and weave the cloth carefully and cleanly. Handmade coarse cloth is a kind of culture. It seems simple, but in fact there is a lot of knowledge in it!”
The exhibition hall is filled with a variety of old coarse cloth products, ranging from colorful bedding to exquisitely crafted clothing. “I have been learning to spin since I was thirteen years old.” Yang Osmanthus said, “The first time I sat in front of the textile machine, I was really nervous and excited. I remember that when I weaved the first piece of cloth, it took a lot of time. It took three whole nights to finish knitting. In the blink of an eye, it has been decades.”
In recent years, as people pay more and more attention to the greenenvironmental protection lifestyle, old coarse cloth has returned to people’s attention. After establishing the cooperative, Yang Guihua insisted on being honest and innovative. While retaining the original textile craftsmanship, she continued to develop new styles. She also led other women in the village to work together and embark on the road to wealth.
“Traditional crafts must focus on innovation and keep up with the trends of the times.” Talking about future plans, Yang Guihua said, “I want to pass on this craft and let everyone know about our old coarse cloth. We will continue Work hard to create our own good life!”
