2022 Consumer Insights—Denim Consumption Habits and Lifestyle Survey
Cotton Incorporated’s Lifestyle Monitor™ Survey on Denim Consumption Habits and Lifestyle Survey in March 2022 (survey sample = 500 people) information is shared as follows:
Wardrobe essentials:
o Frequent wear: A majority of consumers (53%, roughly the same as last year) said they wear jeans or shorts at least three times a week.
o Wearing jeans more often: More than three-quarters (79%) of consumers say they wear jeans about the same (48%) or more (31%) than last year, significantly higher than in 2021 18%), while 19% of consumers said they wear jeans less frequently.
oJeans remain the bottom choice of choice: In the past month, more than one-third of consumers (36%) chose jeans, saying they were their most commonly worn bottoms, followed by sweatpants /Jogging pants (19%), casual pants (15%), leggings (15%) and sweatpants (9%).
o Jeans are still the first choice for casual wear: Nearly 70% of consumers (69%) said jeans are their first choice for casual wear, and more than 80% of consumers (81%) said they prefer to go to places where they can wear jeans. .
Buy jeans:
o One year ahead: More than four-fifths (85%) of consumers say they plan to buy the same (60%) or more in the next year (25%, up from 17% in 2021) jeans.
o Add jeans: The majority of consumers plan to buy new jeans to replace old jeans (41%), and others plan to buy jeans to add to their wardrobe (35%, significantly up from 28% in 2021).
o Brick-and-mortar stores remain the primary place to buy clothing: A majority of consumers (67%) say they plan to buy all (44%) or most (23%) of their jeans in stores this year.
·Online shopping for jeans has increased: More than a quarter of consumers (28%) say they are buying more jeans online now compared to a few years ago. Consumers under 35 years old (37%) are more likely to buy jeans online than those over 35 years old (23%).
o Popular brands: One-third of consumers said their favorite denim brand is Levi’s (34%), followed by Wrangler (10%), Lee (6%), American Eagle (5%) and Old Navy(5%). However, more than two-fifths of consumers (44%, unchanged from last year) say they are less loyal to denim brands than they were a few years ago.
Factors driving purchase: More than 90% of consumers said fit (96%), comfort (95%), quality (93%) and durability (91%) %) is an important factor in motivating them to buy jeans.
o Denim buying inspiration: Most consumers get inspiration for the style of jeans they want to buy from things they already own and like (44%, the same as last year), followed by window displays (27%), INS (21%), YouTube (17%) and family members (17%).
o Popular styles: When buying jeans, consumers most like to buy loose (17%) or classic/regular (13%) styles, followed by straight-leg pants (12%), boot pants (12%) and Slim fit (10% off).
o Increase in casual and slim fits: One-third of consumers say they wear casual or slim fit jeans more often now than before the pandemic (33%, up from 26% in 2021 Increased substantially).
o Jeans pricing: The average American consumer said they typically spend $49 on a pair of jeans, a 12% increase from last year.
Potential opportunities for workplace attire:
oRemote work: More than one-third of consumers (36%) said they expect to wear jeans more often while working remotely than before the epidemic.
o A more casual workplace: More than two-fifths of consumers (44%, significantly up from 39% in 2021) say they would like to work more frequently if their workplace shifted to a more casual dress code Wearing jeans.
Cotton jeans positioning: Nearly three-quarters of consumers (74%) said they prefer cotton or cotton and stretch jeans.
o Check clothing ingredient labels: Two-fifths (40%) of consumers say they always or usually check clothing ingredient labels before buying jeans.
o Advantages of cotton jeans: More than 80% of consumers said that compared with man-made fiber blended jeans, jeans rich in cotton are the most authentic (84%), sustainable (84%), comfortable (83%), and breathable (82%), soft (82%), high quality (82%).
oPolyester and rayon in denim: More than a quarter of consumers say they are concerned about adding polyester (29%) or rayon to their jeans Silk (25%) did not respond positively.
