In 2022, the Sericulture Research Institute of Jiangsu University of Science and Technology has completed the application and submission of materials for the National Silkworm Genetic Resources Gene Bank. On November 25-26, the National Animal Husbandry Station entrusted the Seed Industry Division of the Jiangsu Provincial Department of Agriculture and Rural Affairs to Experts from the Jiangsu Provincial Silkworm Breed Management Department, universities and enterprises were hired to carry out on-site verification of the national gene bank. After spot checks on the production performance, reproductive performance, preservation and quality testing of silkworm seeds, the theory and skills of professional and technical personnel were assessed, and the main instruments and equipment were inspected. After inspection, etc., the expert group unanimously believed that the Sericulture Research Institute met the qualification requirements of the national silkworm genetic resources gene bank, passed the inspection, and reported to the National Animal Husbandry Station.
Jiangsu University of Science and Technology and the Sericulture Research Institute of the Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences, as the only national-level professional sericulture research institutes in the country, have more than 90 years of experience in protecting silkworm germplasm resources. Currently, they have built the largest number of silkworm germplasm resources in the world. , the gene bank of silkworm germplasm resources with the richest types of resources, including local silkworm species, imported species, improved species, mutant genes, germplasm creationnew materials, and breeding materials and more than 1,100 germplasm resources such as castor silkworm. At present, the institute has independently or taken the lead in formulating 11 standards and procedures related to the collection, preservation and description of silkworm germplasm resources. It has won 2 second prizes and 1 first prize in the Science and Technology Progress Award of the Ministry of Agriculture in 1987 and 2001. Won the second prize of the National Science and Technology Progress Award twice. In recent years, the “Huakang” series of special BmNPV-resistant silkworm varieties, the “Silk Rain” series, the “Ye Sanyuan” series and other practical new silkworm varieties cultivated based on silkworm genetic resources have been promoted to more than ten major sericulture production areas across the country, with cumulative demonstrations More than 10 million silkworm seeds have been promoted, making outstanding contributions to the high-quality development of my country’s sericulture industry.
Silkworm germplasm resources are the material basis for the cultivation of silkworm varieties and the fundamental guarantee for the sustainable development of my country’s sericulture in the 21st century. The formal approval of the National Silkworm Genetic Resources Gene Bank is the second time that the Sericulture Research Institute of Jiangsu University of Science and Technology has received the “National Silkworm Germplasm Resource Preservation Center of the Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences”, the “Jiangsu Sericulture Germplasm Resource Gene Bank” and the “Jiangsu Characteristics” After obtaining qualifications for the preservation of silkworm germplasm resources such as “Advantage Seedling Center”, it has obtained another heavyweight qualification title for the preservation of silkworm resources, which further clarifies the main status and qualifications of the Sericulture Research Institute of Jiangsu University of Science and Technology as a national silkworm seed protection unit. .
