Tuo Ling: A “mulberry” machine cultivated in the courtyard to exchange silkworm cocoons for “real gold”
In midsummer, Tuoling Village, Haiyuan Town, Ningming County, is full of greenery, with mulberry trees shading the road.
In the early morning of June, before the fog completely dissipated, Tuoling Village was already bustling with activity. A group of cocoon purchasing workers are carrying electronic scales, blue mesh bags, and purchasing trucks to purchase cocoons at home. Sampling inspection, grading, weighing… Looking at the rising data on the electronic scale, a smile gradually appeared on Sannon’s face.
Haiyuan Town has a mild climate, sufficient sunshine, and moderate rainfall, making it very suitable for growing mulberry and raising silkworms. In particular, Tuoling Village in Haiyuan Town has been raising silkworms for more than 30 years and is highly skilled in breeding techniques. In recent years, under the guidance of the town’s party committee and government, Tuoling Village has adapted measures to local conditions, making full use of the land in front of and behind the house and the idle space at home, vigorously developing the mulberry planting and sericulture industry, and continuously broadening the channels for villagers to increase their income.
According to Lu Xijie, secretary of the Party branch of Tuoling Village, the second batch of silkworm cocoons this year is currently being harvested, about 14,000 kilograms. The current purchase price is 44 yuan/kg, and the income is considerable. This year, the village will raise 6 batches of silkworms, each with an output value of about 290,000 yuan, and the annual output value can reach 1.7 million yuan. “We will continue to carry out technical training on mulberry planting and silkworm rearing to make silkworm cocoons of higher quality and make mulberry farmers more profitable,” said Lu Xijie.
This year’s considerable silkworm prices have stimulated the enthusiasm of mulberry farmers for breeding. Many mulberry farmers said they would create better conditions for raising silkworms and gradually expand the scale of breeding.
“I harvested about 90 kilograms of silkworm cocoons this month and earned nearly 4,000 yuan. This is a real income and strengthens my confidence in raising silkworms.” Villager Lu Yueyue said that he has made a living by developing silkworm rearing in the courtyard. Things are getting better and better, and you can have a stable income without having to go out to work.
According to statistics, the current planting area of the mulberry garden in Tuoling Village has reached 500 acres, with 118 households and 562 people planting mulberry and raising silkworms, involving 71 people in 25 households that have been lifted out of poverty, with an average annual income of 25,000 yuan per household. In the next step, the town will continue to comprehensively utilize Tuoling’s courtyard “mulberry” machine resources to promote the industry to scale and quality.
