ITMF global short fiber weaving machine number remains stable

ITMF has released the International Textile Industry Statistics (ITIS) on productivity and material consumption in the spinning sector of major textile producing countries. According to ITMF data, the global number of short fiber weaving machines remained stable at 221 million spindles in 2020.

The downward trend in these two fields has been observed in the past few years, mainly due to the fact that China’s elimination of backward machines seems to have ended. Stable trends were observed in other regions. According to statistics, the number of air-jet spindles installed in all regions except Europe, Eastern Europe, and Western Europe will increase in 2020.

The replacement of shuttle looms and shuttleless looms will continue in 2020, but for the first time the number of shuttleless looms has been reduced from 1.68 million units in 2019 to 1.64 million units in 2020. Total material consumption in the staple fiber sector dropped sharply from 46 million tons in 2019 to 41 million tons in 2020. The consumption of raw cotton, synthetic fiber, and cellulose short staple fiber decreased by 12%, 14%, and 9% respectively. This mainly reflects lower production levels during the COVID-19 pandemic.
