Patagonia orders Indian Khadi denim again

Patagonia is renewing its support for Khadi denim, an ancient textile technique that originated in India. Patagonia recently ordered more than 17,050 meters (approximately 18,000 yards) of fabric to be used in upcoming collections.

In 2021, after visiting Khadi production base Udyog Bharti, the company purchased 30,000 meters (approximately 32,000 yards) of fabric through the Indian denim factory Arvind and appointed a U.S. third party Evaluator Nest to verify the authenticity and sustainability of its approach.

In 2017 Arvind entered into an agreement with the Indian government organization Khadi and Village Industries Commission (KVIC) to increase demand for Khadi denim products and provide jobs to artisans in the Indian state of Gujarat . The deal is the result of India’s prime minister’s “local to global” drive to boost the country’s products, of which Khadi is one of its biggest contributors.

KVIC Chairman Shri Vinai Kumar Saxena recently touted the benefits of Khadi at a press conference, terming the material an “ethnic cloth” and urged self-improvement in education Everyone in the organization can explore and innovate new ways to wear and promote ancient textile techniques from around the world. The Khadi movement dates back to 1918, when it was promoted by Mahatma Gandhi as a source of income for the Indian people and later became a symbol of opposition to foreign rule.

Khadi is known for its unique texture, featuring 100% cotton hand-spun single-ply yarn with a twill weave. It has a zero carbon footprint as the manufacturing process does not require electricity or any fuel.

Shri Vinai Kumar Saxena said: At a time when the world is looking for sustainable clothing alternatives, Khadi is an environmentally friendly and sustainable fabric that definitely fits the bill. Require.

Khadi’s sustainable development characteristics make it one of Patagonia’s strategic fabric choices. This fabric has won awards in B Lab (NGO)’s “World’s Best” list every year since 2017. In 2021, the brand signed a multi-year sales agreement to secure access to Infinited Fiber Company’s recycled textile fiber Infinna, and worked to persuade U.S. farmers and state governments to accept hemp crops in the “Bring Hemp Home” campaign. The clothing brand aims to be carbon neutral by 2025 and use only renewable or recycled materials in its products.
