Cotton prices fall in southern India, cotton yarn demand sluggish

Foreign news on March 10, the price of cotton in Kupang fell by 500 rupees per kandi (356 kg). Trade sources report that textile companies only buy cotton for immediate needs, and the demand and supply of cotton are almost equal. It is estimated that the arrival volume of cotton in India is about 155,000 bales (170 kg each), and the arrival volume in Kupang is 35,000 bales. The price per kandi hovers around Rs 62,000-62,500.

South Indian cotton yarn is bearish, traders said, with limited orders from domestic and foreign brands and retailers. This has caused downstream industries to avoid buying new cotton yarn. In Mumbai, cotton yarn prices, including 60-count carded weft yarn, fell, but other cotton yarn prices were flat and were more dependent on export demand.

The demand in the downstream industry in Mumbai is weak, and the price of 60-count carded weft yarn has dropped by 5-7 rupees per kilogram. However other cotton yarn grades remained stable. Demand in the domestic garment industry is poor, but export demand is good. A trader in Mumbai said: “The demand for cotton yarn is very low. The downstream garment industry is facing the problem of slowdown in end-user demand, and the prices of some quantities and varieties of yarn have fallen.”

In Mumbai, 60-count carded warp and weft yarn prices are 1525-1540 and 1400-1450 rupees per 5 kg (excluding GST). 60 count combed warp yarn 342-345 rupees per kg. 80 count carded weft yarn is priced at Rs 1,440-1,480 per 4.5 kg. The price of 44/46 carded warp yarn is 280-285 rupees per kilogram. The price of 40/41 carded warp yarn is 260-268 rupees per kilogram, and the 40/41 combed warp price is 290-303 rupees per kilogram.

Demand has also slowed in Tirupur, with trade sources reporting that buyers are not interested in additional purchases amid uncertainty over apparel demand. Manufacturing units are facing severe shortage of garment orders. In this market, the price of 30-count combed cotton yarn is 280-285 rupees per kg (GST extra), 34-count combed cotton yarn is 292-297 rupees per kg, and 40-count combed cotton yarn is 308-312 rupees per kg. 30-count carded cotton yarn is sold at Rs 255-260 per kg, 34-count carded cotton yarn at Rs 265-270 per kg, and 40-count carded cotton yarn at Rs 270-275 per kg.
