Flame retardant properties of fabrics Flame retardant fabric testing
1. Match test method
The match test method can Evaluate the flame retardant effect of fabrics or relatively compare flame retardant properties. During the test, take a piece of fabric about 2.5cm*30cm, place a lit match under the sample, burn until the match burns out (or 5-12S as specified), and observe the burning condition or flame retardant effect of the sample. It can be stipulated that the sample burning time does not exceed 5 seconds to be qualified, and the sample exceeds the center line or the smoldering time exceeds 15 seconds to be unqualified. This method is close to the vertical method.
2. Lighter test method
The sample size is selected according to the test needs, and the heat source Using a lighter, the time is generally 5 seconds. The heat source placement location is similar to the application conditions. After the fire is extinguished, observe the flame spread. If the flame spread is not serious, it is qualified.
3. Ethanol combustion test method
The heat source is 0.3mL absolute ethanol. Put it into a small beaker (bottle caps are also acceptable). The test can be done by vertical method, horizontal method or 45° tilt method. The distance between ethanol and fabric and measurement indicators can be determined according to requirements, such as char length, burning area, smoldering time, and afterburning. Time and combustion residue conditions, etc.
4. Tablet test method
The test uses hexamethylenetetramine (HMTA ) tablet (made by pressing powder), with a mass of 150 mg and a diameter of 6 mm. If possible, you can use a square metal plate (230mmx230mm, with a round hole with a diameter of 205mm in the middle). During the test, place the tablet in the center of the sample (300mmx300mm), lightly touch the surface of the tablet with a lit match, and observe whether the ignited flame burns out or flameless combustion extends to the edge of the hole in the metal plate, which is the end point of the test. Use a ruler to measure the maximum distance from the center of the sample to the edge of the damaged area, and record the time it takes for the tablet to ignite until flame or flameless combustion extends to the edge of the metal plate. This method is applicable to the evaluation of the heat and flame response properties of floor covering textiles, such as carpets or combined textile materials. It can also be used to observe the flame retardant effect during process testing and to compare and select test conditions.
5. Hot metal nut method
Place a stainless steel hexagonal nut (30±2g) is heated to 950°C in an electric furnace, take out the nut with crucible tongs, immediately place it in the center of the sample (300mm*300mm), and remove the nut after contact for 30 seconds. Measure the flaming burning time, smoldering time and the time required from the nut placement point to the ignition point to record the spiral width to the edge of the pressure ring. This method is suitable for testing various floor covering fabrics.
