Textile Laboratory: How is the moisture absorption and quick-drying function tested?

Clothes with good moisture absorption properties and quick moisture conduction and moisture removal functions are called moisture absorption and quick-drying clothes. But a few decades ago, this kind of clothing was almost impossible to achieve.

In the past, cotton was generally the preferred material for sportswear due to its good hygroscopicity. However, the disadvantage of cotton clothing is that it is not easy to dry after being soaked with sweat. After sweating during exercise, the body feels like being wrapped in wet cloth, which is very uncomfortable. However, if you choose chemical fibers that are easy to dry but have poor hygroscopicity as sportswear, sweat cannot be eliminated in time and accumulates on the surface of the skin, causing a stuffy and airtight feeling. Therefore, the two properties of “moisture absorption” and “quick drying” were previously regarded as incompetent. Reconcile contradictions.

With the advancement of material technology, chemical modification technology has emerged. Researchers are trying to improve or improve the water absorption, transfer, and discharge functions of non-hydrophilic fabrics through fiber modification or special fabric structure design, so that they can be both water-absorbent and moisture-conducting. Compared with untreated cotton clothing, this type of chemical fiber fabrics can evaporate moisture more easily and dry faster under the same external conditions. As a result, the moisture-absorbing and quick-drying clothes that are commonly used today have been developed.

What indicators should be tested for this type of clothing in a textile laboratory? How should this be done? Let’s go to the textile testing laboratory to have a look.

Standard

The main basis for testing moisture-absorbent and quick-drying clothing in my countryGB/T 21655.1—2008 “Evaluation of moisture absorption and quick-drying properties of textiles – Part 1: Single combination test method” and GB/T 21655.2—2009“Evaluation of moisture absorption and quick-drying properties of textiles – Part 2: Dynamic moisture transfer method” two standards.

Evaluation indicators

Tested according to GB/T 21655.1—2008 , the hygroscopicity evaluation index isWater absorption, drip diffusion time and wicking height, the quick-drying evaluation index isevaporate Rate and moisture vapor transmission rate.

Tested according to GB/T 21655.2—2009 , its hygroscopicity evaluation index isWetting time and water absorption rate, the quick-drying evaluation index isBig penetration surface Wet radius, penetration surface liquid water diffusion speed and one-way transfer index, the comprehensive quick-drying evaluation index isOne-way transmission index and liquid water dynamic transmission comprehensive index.

Currently, most laboratories use GB/ T 21655.1-2008 tests moisture absorption and quick-drying items. According to the requirements of this standard, most moisture-absorbing and quick-drying functional clothing are completed using common laboratory measurement tools and equipment.

(Take GB/T 21655.1-2008 as an example)

8. Test of wicking height

Cut 6 samples, the long sides of 3 samples are parallel to the warp direction of the fabric, and the other 3 samples Danger of having the long sides of the specimen parallel to the fabric. The length of each sample is not less than 250mm, and the effective width is 30mm.

Then hang the sample vertically, with one end immersed in the third-level water, and record the third-level water edge at 30 minutes The rising height of the specimen.

                      Wicking height test

9. Test of moisture permeability

Cut 3 samples, each with a diameter of 70mm. Place the moisture-permeable cup containing the desiccant and sealed with the fabric sample in a sealed environment (test box) with a specified temperature (38±2)°C and humidity (90±2)%. Calculate the moisture permeability of the sample based on the change in mass of the moisture permeable cup within a certain period of time.

Moisture permeability test

According to the standard requirements, the product must be washed multiple times before testing the above items.

All indicators of the product before and after washing should meet the corresponding technical indicators before it can be clearly stated It is a moisture-absorbing and quick-drying product.

For knitted clothing, the moisture absorption and quick-drying functional indicators before and after washing meet:Water absorption rate ≥200%, dripping diffusion time ≤3s, wicking height ≥100mm, evaporation rate ≥0.18 g/h, moisture permeability ≥10000 g/(m 2•d), it can be determined that the moisture absorption and quick-drying function is qualified.
