The fire-resistant coating of flame-retardant fabric is equivalent to a protective layer of the fabric, which can prevent the underlying fabric from catching fire. It can be applied at different stages of the supply chain. In other cases, the manufacturer, distributor or end user can also decide on its after-sales treatment.
In some applications, flame retardant coatings also include other treatments (such as those that provide anti-fungal or anti-microbial properties), but this process must be done with care. When providing a customer with a flame retardant fabric, we will modify our coating formulation to include flame retardant properties. This is not simply to add new properties to the fabric on the original formula, but to eliminate a series of factors that affect chemicals for customers. The problem is that with so many chemicals on the market, flame retardant fabric manufacturers can’t say their products will work with all stain cleaners. To be successful, flame retardant fabrics must be certified by a testing laboratory to ensure that their flame retardant properties have not been inhibited.
Safety plays an important role in the coating itself. The flame retardant treatment process is non-toxic and does not produce hazardous waste. Industry insiders are working hard, and some organizations such as the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) are even banning the use of certain chemical agents.
