Why are health functional textiles so popular?
As people’s health awareness increases, the requirements for textiles have become more stringent. Warmth and comfort in the general sense are far from meeting the needs of consumers. It has become a fashion for consumers to pursue health and wellness while wearing clothes and hats. At present, textiles have various functions, and some are even exaggerated, which is suspected of misleading consumers. The lag in standards for health-care functional textiles has affected the production and sales of functional textiles. What are the differences between health functional textiles and traditional textiles? What is the progress of health functional textile standards? With these questions in mind, the reporter made a special trip to interview Zhou Bangyong, deputy secretary-general of the China Health Care Association.
Reporter: Currently, consumers are talking a lot about functional textiles, and consumer recognition is increasing year by year, but there are misunderstandings. Please describe to us the current development status of health functional textiles.
Zhou Bangyong: In textiles, modern science and technology and technical means are used to add certain health care functions to textile products. For example, health-care bras open up the microcirculation system to smooth blood flow in the breasts and prevent breast hyperplasia; and antibacterial functional underwear reduces skin morbidity and greatly improves the quality of life.
Functional textiles are increasingly recognized by consumers. A pillow containing far-infrared rays and negative oxygen ions is several times more expensive than an ordinary pillow. It is precisely because of this business opportunity and the huge market that many companies have joined the ranks of functional textile production. Of course, it is inevitable to encounter some problems during development. But generally speaking, the development of functional textiles is healthy. The scope and field of cooperation between the China Health Care Association and the China Knitting Association are also gradually expanding.
Reporter: The variety of health functional textiles is constantly expanding. There are many new features being implemented.
Zhou Bangyong: Yes. The combination of traditional textiles and traditional Chinese medicine has produced strong vitality. If we can extract plant fibers from China’s unique traditional Chinese medicine and make textiles for body conditioning, disease prevention and health care, it will be a magic weapon for us to open up the international market. We can even make the patient wear clothing while treating some of his diseases. You can imagine how big this market is. In addition, the use of functional textiles can also improve athletes’ physiological functions and improve sports performance, which are all achievable.
Reporter: Standards are something that production companies are very concerned about. As far as I know, the Preparatory Committee of the National Technical Committee for Standardization of Health Products has been established. Could you please introduce the situation in this regard?
Zhou Bangyong: The Preparatory Committee of the National Technical Committee for Standardization of Health Products was established in March 2007. In July, we and the China Standardization Association jointly drafted and promulgated the “Health Functional Textiles Association Standard”. This standard stipulates the terminology, definitions, classification, requirements and experimental methods, result determination, testing rules, marking and packaging of health functional textiles with functions such as antibacterial, anti-ultraviolet, anti-radiation, and far-infrared emission. In the future, standards will also be made for functional fibers such as negative oxygen ions, bamboo charcoal fiber, milk fiber, soybean fiber, etc. to standardize corporate behavior and strengthen industry self-discipline. The formulation of standards has been improved with the continuous development of health-care functional textiles. In short, the standard work will be based on absorbing the standards of leading enterprises in the industry, and coordinate with relevant national departments to formulate a complete health functional textile system as soon as possible.
