The Coca-Cola Company of the United States will launch a series of T-shirts made from recycled materials. “Coke and Recycling Clothing” are T-shirts made from recycled plastic.

The Coca-Cola Company recently pledged to invest $60 million to build a recycling plant and other environmental projects. One of the plants being built in Spartansburg, South Carolina, will be the largest bottle-to-bottle recycling plant in the world, using old bottles to directly produce new bottles.

Coca-Cola also decided to use recycled materials in other ways, such as recycled polyethylene terephthalate (RPET). In the mid-1980s, Coke T-shirts, sweats, miniskirts, and even glasses were all the rage. The company is launching a PRET series of T-shirts, using materials with a recycling theme. For example, the glass bottle with arrow swirls, and the small Coca-Cola logo affixed to the bottom of the bottle.

Coca-Cola designed a series of T-shirts made from fabric produced in Park City, Utah, and the recycled clothing will be launched in December at Fred Segal Melrose, a popular clothing store in West Hollywood. “Cycle” is a two-year-old company that says its mission is to develop sustainable clothing

To produce clothing fabrics, plastic bottles are crushed and polyester yarn is pulled out. Then blend the yarn with cotton. Patagonia makes products partially made from recycled plastic bottles. Coca-Cola is a company that really sells these products in bulk, and the T-shirt line may be very suitable for high-end consumers.

In addition to the recycling plant, the beverage giant recently pledged to invest $2 million in a recycling bank for an organization in Philadelphia that provides bonus points for household recycling and store recycling. Families who decide to donate points to Recycling Bank Green Schools or Ocean Conservation will receive matching support funds from the Coke Company. Recycling Bank currently serves Delaware, New Jersey and Pennsylvania, and the organization’s services will be nationwide in 2008.
