Cotton yarn and fabrics continue to constitute India’s important exports
India is the world’s second largest exporter of cotton textiles. Although the proportion of cotton yarn and fabrics in India’s total exports has declined in recent years, cotton yarns and fabrics are still important export products from India. Exports of cotton yarn and fabrics accounted for 23% of the country’s total exports in 1950-51, 10.12% in 1960-61 and 7.8% in 1998-99.
The total export value of these products was Rs 65 crore in 1960-1961, which increased to Rs 408 crore in 1980-81 and Rs 14,474 crore in 2004-05. In the total value of textile exports, fabrics produced by textile mills accounted for 26%, clothing accounted for 46%, cloth produced by handlooms accounted for 12%, cloth produced by power looms accounted for 3%, and cotton knitwear accounted for 3%. The proportion is 3%.
The main importing countries of Indian cotton fabrics are Russia, the United States, the United Kingdom, the United States, Sudan, Nepal, Australia, France, Nigeria, Kenya, Ethiopia, Tanzania, Sri Lanka and Singapore. Indian cotton manufacturers have been given special status after signing an agreement with the European Community (EEC). Besides providing marketing and research facilities, the Cotton Textile Export Promotion Council also helps promote exports of cotton fabrics. Indian exports are facing stiff competition from cheap textiles from Pakistan, Japan and China.
