Mauritius once again raised the issue of extending the “third country yarn” clause to the United States
According to the Mauritius “Independent” report, the fifth Mauritius Trade and Investment Framework Agreement Council meeting was held on January 16-17, 2012. US Deputy Trade Representative Marantis attended the meeting.
Officials from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Regional Integration and International Trade of Mauritius said that during this meeting, Mauritius once again held consultations with the United States on extending the term of the “third country yarn” clause in the African Growth and Opportunity Act. In addition, the conference topics also cover areas such as trade capacity building, intellectual property rights, environment, information communications and financial services.
According to the amendments to the African Growth and Opportunity Act passed by the U.S. Congress in 2008, the validity period of the “third country yarn” clause will be extended to September 2012. Since this clause is of great significance to promoting African exports to the United States, sub-Saharan African countries have applied to the United States several times in different ways to extend the term of the clause.
