French clothing and textile import sources tend to diversify

The French newspaper “Le Figaro” reported that sales of French clothing and textiles fell by 2.7% in 2011, but imports increased by 7%. China remains the largest source of imports for the French apparel and textile market. However, due to rising labor costs, the price of clothing and textiles produced in China has increased. From January to November 2011, the amount of clothing and textiles imported by France from China increased by 7%, but the import quantity only increased by 4%. This trend has led France to choose other clothing and textile producing countries to diversify its dependence on China. In 2011, 68% of French textile importers chose to import clothing textiles from countries other than China.
In 2011, France’s textile imports from Bangladesh increased by 26%, making Bangladesh the second largest source of French textile imports; France’s textile imports from Pakistan increased by 29%. In addition to labor costs, commodity transportation costs are also one of the important factors considered by French importers. The Czech Republic and Bulgaria in Eastern Europe accounted for 55% and 56% of their exports to France in 2011 respectively. Romania has become France’s largest source of textile imports in Europe.
In 2011, France imported a total of 895 million euros of T-shirt casual clothing, of which Bangladesh was the largest source country, accounting for 28% of the total; China accounted for 13%; and Turkey accounted for 12%. The total import volume of underwear products is 50 million euros. China is the largest source country, accounting for 42% of the total; Tunisia accounts for 14%; Morocco accounts for 12%. The total import of men’s clothing was 116 million euros, with Italy as the largest source country, accounting for 42% of the total; Turkey accounted for 23%; Spain accounted for 8.3%; and China accounted for 8.3%.
