Energy shortage hinders Pakistan from meeting textile export targets

According to Pakistan’s “National” report, Gohar Ejaz, president of the All Pakistan Textile Mills Association (APTMA), recently stated that the continued energy shortage has not only led to thousands of people losing their jobs, but also seriously affected the production capacity of the textile industry. He estimated that Pakistan’s textile exports in this fiscal year (July 2011 to June 2012) may only be US$11 billion, far lower than the original export target of US$16 billion. However, he said that if the textile industry receives uninterrupted energy supply in the last few months of the fiscal year, final exports may increase to US$13 billion.

According to reports, Pakistan’s textile exports in the first seven months of this fiscal year (July 2011 to January 2012) were US$6.936 billion, a decrease of 6.73% from US$7.437 billion in the same period of the previous fiscal year. Due to the decline in textile exports, Pakistan’s overall exports may be difficult to exceed US$24 billion this fiscal year.
