Power crisis drains Gaza’s textile sector
About 1,000 workers have been laid off in the Gaza Strip as a power crisis in the area triggered the halt of more than 100 production units, the Gaza Textile Federation said.
These shuttered factories and units are the last remnants of Gaza’s textile manufacturing industry, which has been devastated by Israel’s blockade of the Strip, said Mohammad Hamdan, chairman of the Gaza Textile Union.
The Israeli siege has rendered 800 factories inoperable, preventing them from importing inputs and causing the unemployment of approximately 19,000 workers. These 100 units have restored 20% of their production capacity because they have successfully obtained limited electricity supplies through Gaza’s tunnel network.
However, this production situation is currently at risk, as insufficient fuel supplies have forced Gaza’s only power plant to shut down three times in a month.
