The overseas production capacity of clothing and sporting goods is transferred from China to Southeast Asia
“Nihon Keizai Shimbun” reported that Japanese retailers’ apparel outsourcing and sporting goods manufacturers are accelerating the establishment of a “China + 1” overseas production system, that is, establishing another production base in a Southeast Asian country outside of China. The reasons for this trend are: first, companies disperse their production bases to cope with emergencies such as emergency production increases or labor shortages to ensure stable supply; second, they avoid risks such as the increase in labor costs in China.
Ito-Yokado’s functional underwear production is 95% in China. This year it plans to transfer part of its production capacity to Southeast Asian countries such as Thailand, and the proportion of production in China is expected to drop to 75%; retail giant UNY plans to reduce the proportion of clothing production in China by 2014 It dropped from 74% to 65%, and the proportion of production in Thailand increased from 9% to 13%; ASICS and MIZUNO reduced the proportion of sports shoes and other sports goods production in China, and expanded the production scale in Vietnam and Indonesia. .
According to statistics from the Ministry of Finance, clothing imports from China in 2011 decreased by more than 10% compared with 2007, while imports from ASEAN countries have increased for eight consecutive years. The report said that in order to avoid the sharp rise in labor costs in China, companies have accelerated the transfer of production to Southeast Asian countries. However, the advantages of cheap labor in Southeast Asia are limited, and the risk of rising costs is also increasing.
