Chinese-made clothing contains excessive chemical substances that pollute German river water
According to a report by Germany’s Le Monde (website: www.welt.de) on March 28, a Greenpeace investigation found that clothing and textiles imported by Germany from China contained “nonylphenol hydroxyethoxyester (nonylphenol hydroxyethoxyester)”. NPE)”, which is discharged during the washing process and becomes “nonylphenol (NP)”, which flows into rivers and lakes with wastewater. Chemistry experts from Greenpeace said that although these substances are not harmful to the human body, they are highly toxic to aquatic life such as fish and shellfish.
According to reports, the EU has regulations prohibiting or strictly controlling the use of NPE or NP, but there are no specific regulations on the import of textiles containing such substances. A Greenpeace investigation last summer found that 52 of 78 products from China were determined to contain NPE. China itself suffers from millions of people suffering from wastewater contaminated by this chemical. Greenpeace recently inspected these products and found that 80% of the NPE contained in half of the samples was precipitated during the first wash and was discharged into the sewer with wastewater, which could not be effectively filtered out. Greenpeace requires importers to take immediate measures to prevent suppliers from using toxic materials. Many large fashion companies have already limited the content of NPE residues, but they still exceed the standards.
The German quality inspection agency believes that clothing containing toxic substances is also harmful to the human body. If worn for too long, it can easily cause skin allergies and itching.
