Peruvian textile export prospects worry the industry
According to Peruvian newspaper First News, Juan Balías Velazquez, president of the Peruvian Exporters Association (ADEX), said that from January to April 2012, Peruvian garment exports reached 473 million U.S. dollars, an increase from the same period last year. An increase of 14%. Still, exports have not returned to pre-crisis levels. Considering that this industry is labor-intensive and most vulnerable to the impact of the international financial crisis, it is necessary for the Peruvian government to take measures to reactivate the industry.
Chairman Baleas also said that the United States is still the main destination for Peruvian garment exports, with exports reaching US$199 million, accounting for 42%. However, in the first four months of this year, this number dropped by 19% year-on-year. As the United States is in the middle of mid-term elections and is affected by the European economic crisis, there are also risks in the country’s market. The second largest export target is Venezuela, with export value of US$145 million, a year-on-year increase of 162%. But in the long term, this growth will be short-lived due to the unstable political situation in Venezuela. Other export markets were Brazil (a year-on-year increase of 38%), Colombia (a year-on-year increase of 27%) and Argentina (a slight decrease of 4% year-on-year). Since both Brazil and Argentina have adopted protectionist policies against free trade, the Peruvian government should introduce industry encouragement policies to deal with the unfavorable situation of short-term exports in this industry.
From the perspective of the export market, secret garment exports have a total of 82 destinations. In recent years, these products have successfully entered countries such as Haiti, North Korea, Lithuania, Suriname, Indonesia, Ukraine, Guyana, Romania, Gabon, and Qatar. According to relevant data from the Peruvian Ministry of Labor, the Peruvian textile and garment industry has created more than 410,000 jobs. Among them, 270,000 jobs are created by the garment industry.
