“China Textile and Apparel Industry Life Cycle Assessment Working Group” accelerates dual carbon action

Currently, carbon neutrality and sustainable development have become a broad consensus in the global industry and a major issue of international competition and cooperation. China has solemnly promised the world to achieve “carbon peak” before 2030 and strive to achieve “carbon neutrality” before 2060.

During the “14th Five-Year Plan” period, “carbon peaking and carbon neutrality” will also be the new competitive advantage and important focus of the textile and apparel industry. The ChinaTextile Industry Federation has been building new comparative advantages in technological innovation, manufacturing innovation, and rule innovation to achieve a “win-win” of low-carbon development and capacity improvement.

Accelerate textile dual carbon action

In recent years, China’s textile industry has changed its inherent image of a high-energy-consuming, high-pollution industry, accelerated its transformation from a traditional industry to a technology industry, a green industry, and a fashion industry, and made solid strides towards becoming a textile power. The green and low-carbon transformation of the industry is related to the foundation and foundation of industrial security, and determines the foundation and stamina of industrial development. In order to promote green development, the China Textile and Apparel Industry Council launched the “Carbon Management Innovation 2020 Action” in 2017, and was one of the first industries in China to propose a carbon neutral goal. In 2019, China Textile Federation signed the United Nations “Fashion Industry Climate Action Charter” as a party to participate in the global climate governance of the fashion industry; and upgraded the “Carbon Management Innovation 2020 Action” to the “Climate Innovation 2030 Action”. A group of industry leading companies and hundreds of billions of industrial clusters have announced their participation in the action, with 50,000 industry people participating.

In May 2020, the Social Responsibility Office of the China Textile and Apparel Industry Federation officially launched the sustainable textiles “Full Life Cycle Assessment” project, joining forces with Lenzing Group, Evely, Wuxi Yimian, Matsui Textile, Binkang Printing and Dyeing, and Mercury Home Textiles, Baima Group, Yinshilai, and Yuyue Home Textiles carried out product evaluations of Lenzing Fiber-Eveli women’s shirts and Lenzing Fiber-Mercury Home Textiles.

On December 22, 2020, the “China Textile and Apparel Industry Life Cycle Assessment Working Group (CNTAC-LCA) was officially established to accelerate the establishment of a textile product life cycle assessment system and an environmental footprint database from the terminal brand side The green product environmental information disclosure system is traceable from the raw material end to the whole chain, tracing and value-mining the green attributes of products in the entire value chain from production to consumption, and continues to promote the development of efficient, clean, low-carbon, and recyclable manufacturing in the entire industry chain. This will enhance the ability of enterprises to deal with green barriers in the international market, support consumers’ green identification, and guide green consumption. After development, the CNTAC-LCA working group currently has 57 institutional members, including 46 enterprises and 11 academic institutions and organizational alliances. Covering the entire industry chain of fiber materials, textile chemicals, spinning, weaving, printing and dyeing processing and clothing production, as well as the brand and consumer end.

On June 1, 2021, the “Chinese Fashion Brand Climate Innovation Carbon Neutral Acceleration Plan” was launched to accelerate the industry’s green and low-carbon transformation and contribute industrial strength to China’s dual carbon goals.

Under the main theme of being a technological power and a manufacturing power, China’s speed has long been verified. At this time, we can only follow the trend, outperform the new cycle with green transformation, guide industry enterprises to accelerate green transformation, and pave the way for the development of China’s textile and apparel industry. Sustainable development and consumption provide an infrastructure platform to enhance the industry’s global market competitiveness and international voice.

 02

Pay attention to carbon footprint

Practice a low-carbon and green lifestyle

Since its establishment, the China Textile and Apparel Industry Life Cycle Assessment Working Group (“CNTAC-LCA Working Group” for short) has used “full life cycle assessment” as the entry point to demonstrate green product life cycle management for many companies. Recently, it has New progress has been made and the “Carbon Footprint Assessment of Aimer Children’s Home Clothing” report has been released. The results of the report show that the carbon footprint of three models of Aimu children’s home clothes using zero-carbon Tencel Modal fiber during the production stage of Modal fiber was reduced to 0. Among them, the carbon footprint value of AK2416541 Transformers comic series pullover long-sleeved pajamas is 2.97 kgCO2eq./piece; the carbon footprint value of AK2426541 Transformers comic series long-sleeved pajamas is 2.37 kgCOzeq./piece; AK1446551 My Little Pony Dessert Beauty Series long-sleeved nightgown The carbon footprint value is 3.33 kgCOzeq./piece. In other words, the three children’s home clothes released 2.97 kilograms, 2.37 kilograms, and 3.33 kilograms of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere respectively during all stages before they were delivered to consumers. If the three Admiration children’s home clothes are made of standard Tencel Modal fiber, the performance is as follows: AK2416541 Transformers comic series pullover long-sleeved pajamas have a carbon footprint value of 3.39 kgCO2eq./piece, AK2426541 Transformers comic series long pajamas The carbon footprint value is 2.75kgCO2eq./piece, and the carbon footprint value of AK1446551 My Little Pony Dessert Beauty Series long-sleeved nightgown is 3.86 kgCO2eq./piece.

This time, children’s home clothes are the main body, and the source is traced to the upstream layers of the supply chain. It is from “cradle to gate” and breaks through the dilemma of difficult traceability of carbon footprint data in the domestic textile and apparel industry. The evaluation results are calculated and reported by the textile and apparel industry product life cycle assessment application system (LCAplus system). Head of the Social Responsibility Office of China Textile and Apparel Industry FederationResponsible for the coordination of various industrial chain links in this report. Due to the impact of the epidemic, this data survey was conducted online. Data sources include enterprise data (actual measurements, production statistics or experience data), third-party data (environmental protectionmonitoring data), map calculations, and LCAplus system provision. Most of the carbon footprint data currently on the market are not real-life assessments. In order to provide the industry and consumers with credible material and product environmental footprint data, this report uses real-life data and background data. Real-life data is collected through on-site and historical data. The actual production data obtained by adjusting gears and other methods mainly include the energy consumption in the production process, the usage of product raw and auxiliary materials, the use of main product packaging materials and the amount of waste generated, and the time of raw materials and main packaging from the manufacturing place to the final delivery point. Transportation distance, and the distance a product travels from the point of production to the point of distribution. Background data includes production data for major excipients, electricity emissions data, and environmental impacts caused by different transportation types.

In the future, more textile and apparel companies need to unite, pay attention to their carbon footprint, and guide consumers to practice a low-carbon and green lifestyle starting from the selection of clothing raw materials.
