Hengshui: Seed cotton is picked sporadically, but there is little enthusiasm for purchasing and processing
Recently, affected by fine weather, cotton peaches and a few peaches in Hengshui, Hebei Province have begun to crack and sprout, and cotton farmers have begun to pick sporadically.
Since September 1st, the weather process in Hengshui City has changed from three consecutive days of rain to mostly sunny to cloudy, with wind force 2-3. The temperature at noon has risen to about 35 degrees Celsius, but the temperature difference between day and night get bigger. Affected by the good weather, except for the fuqian peaches that had turned black, rotten and fallen off due to continuous rain in the early stage, the rest of the fuqian peaches and about 1/5 of the fuqian peaches began to accelerate the cracking of bells and the seed cotton sprouting.
The current work of cotton farmers is to spray foliage fertilizer quickly to add nutrients to the later development of cotton bolls; second, to sort out the crazy branches, remove the old leaves at the bottom, and continue to improve ventilation conditions; third, in the early harvesting period, the peach blossoms will crack and bloom. At the same time, we picked out the stiff cotton and rusty cotton that were damaged by rain. At the same time, we picked out the valuable fuqian peaches that had completely turned black, so that we could peel the peaches and get the cotton back home.
It is understood that the local seed cotton picking period has been delayed by 5-7 days compared with normal years. The current seed cotton harvested by cotton farmers is only about 7-8 pounds per mu. Among the picked seed cotton, stiff-flap cotton and rain-rust cotton account for 70%. More than %, the rest are soft white cotton, and the quality of seed cotton is far behind that of the same period last year. If the weather is normal in the later period, the bulk picking period of seed cotton should be in mid-to-late September, when the quality of seed cotton will be improved compared to the current situation.
Since local new cotton has not yet been purchased on a large scale, only 2-3 local companies have made preparations for acquisition and processing in the new year. According to statistics, there are 51 cotton purchasing and processing enterprises in Hengshui City with purchasing and processing qualifications. In recent years, they have been affected by the low participation in cotton futures options, the impact of Xinjiang cotton, the rise of large-scale cotton merchants’ price-setting transactions, and their weak ability to withstand market risks. Affected by various factors, the local industry-wide losses have gradually increased, and thus the industry has entered a period of serious shrinkage. So far, about 70% of cotton purchasing and processing enterprises have either stopped operations or switched production, and only 20% are struggling to maintain their operations. According to figures released by the China Fiber Inspection Network, there are only 4 local companies in the 2020/21 cotton year, and a total of 1,683 tons oflint7479 packages have been submitted for inspection. The amount submitted for inspection only accounts for the city’s total 2.59% of total production. If the amount of lint cotton sold directly into the factory without public inspection is added, the city’s processed quantity last year only accounted for about 5% of the total output. The rest of the seed cotton basically flowed to Xingtai, Cangzhou, Hebei and Dezhou, Shandong. The new cotton year has arrived. The main problems currently faced by local cotton processing enterprises are: first, the lack of necessary operating funds; second, the aging of production equipment and processing technology; third, under the market situation of increasing loss of customers, it is difficult to be interested in continuing engaged in this industry.
