Hubei Laifeng: Silkworm breeding spins out “wealth-making silk” and industrial revitalization shows “new prosperity”
Recently, Laifeng County, Enshi, Hubei Province, ushered in the first bumper harvest of silkworms this autumn. Silkworm farmers in each village successively harvested and sold silkworm cocoons, presenting pictures of bumper harvests.
In Gaodong Community, Jiusi Town, Laifeng County, large and small bags filled with white silkworm cocoons filled the cocoon station. Staff from the Fuyuan Silkworm and Cocoon Professional Cooperative grade and weigh the cocoons. Farmer Deng Guoan started breeding silkworms last year and this year ushered in his third harvest.
Deng Guoan, a sericulture farmer in Jiusi Town, Laifeng County: “After twenty days of breeding, we have now harvested more than 200 kilograms. At 23 yuan per kilogram, we can sell it for four to five thousand yuan. (It is expected that) we will breed mulberries this year. Silkworms can earn more than 20,000 yuan, which is more profitable than farming. I plan to plant three or four acres of silkworm trees later.”
In recent years, Jiusi Town has taken many measures to protect the area of mulberry gardens and promote sericulture technology. Silkworm technical instructors have gone to the fields and provided guidance to households, making every effort to solve the difficulties and blockages in mulberry breeding. At the same time, as this year White silk sells well at home and abroad, and market prices continue to rise. In the third quarter, the town’s silkworm cocoon output reached about 50,000 kilograms, with a total output value of about 1.15 million yuan. More than 200 households benefited from it and increased their income.
