We use the green areas of mines to plant mulberry and raise silkworms to increase the income of our people.” Shi Qunhui, a villager in Xianghe Village, Longtan Town, once said Working in the mines, as Huayuan County vigorously cracked down on mines and polluting enterprises in the mining areas, he voluntarily resigned and joined other villagers in the village to form a cooperative, contracting more than 3,000 acres of tailings ponds and mine flats on nearby mountains to cover them with soil and plant mulberry trees. In addition to providing free mulberry seedlings, it also provides subsidies for silkworm seeds, and the price of purchased silkworm cocoons is 5 yuan per catty. Subsidies have greatly increased the enthusiasm of residents in mining areas to grow mulberry and raise silkworms, and also accelerated the construction of green mines. “In view of the fact that edible crops cannot be grown in the tailings pond, we have developed more than 8,000 acres of sericulture planting on the tailings pond, which not only achieves soil cover and greening, but also achieves a win-win situation of ecological and economic benefits.” Huayuan County Agriculture and Rural Affairs Shi Weiyu, director of the bureau’s sericulture station, introduced.
In recent years, Huayuan County has actively implemented its ecological civilization responsibilities and carried out the creation of green mines.
